City Council Votes No on Old National Economic Development
South Fulton City Council, seated (l to r): Catherine Rowell (District 1) ● Carmalitha Gumbs (District 2) ● Helen Z. Willis (District 3) ● Naeema Gilyard (District 4) ● Rosie Jackson (District 5)
standing (l to r): Councilman khalid (District 6) ● Mayor Bill Edwards ● Mayor Pro tem Mark Baker (District 7)
Tuesday, April 23 — against the advice of the City's Financial Advisor — South Fulton's City Council voted No on a Resolution by Councilman khalid to prioritize Old National Highway for economic development.

Old National’s Councilpeople all supported the measure. The rest of City Council voted against it. South Fulton's Mayor, Bill Edwards, said nothing.

However, in a later vote, Edwards and other members of Council supported legislation to create an Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), which would raise property taxes to pay for government facilities.

URA funds could be used to operate & maintain several facilities on the northside of South Fulton that city officials are seeking to acquire from Fulton County.

In contrast, Councilman khalid's proposal would have created a development authority to encourage private investment on Old National — South Fulton's largest commercial corridor — to build up the city's commercial tax revenues. Nearly 60 percent of South Fulton's budget comes from property taxes. South Fulton has only one hotel (on Highway 74, near Fairburn) and no movie theater.
