Great opportunity to
support a locally-funded
microplastics-pollution research project

Associate Professor Sophie Leterme's project How much plastic is in our ocean?  is wonderful mix of important science and art. Sophie is crowdfunding independent scientific research with a Pozible campaign, backed up by an exhibition at The Wheatsheaf Hotel, to fund a survey of the waters along South Australia's coastline from Ceduna to Port Macdonnell. Not content to teach and research at Flinders University, Sophie is also an excellent emerging printmaker and Instagram's Microplastics Warrior.

To find out more, and support this excellent research... please click here.
There is just over a week to help Sophie get this great project off the ground.
If you can, please share the news and/or donate.
And if you or your school would like to help in any way, please email Sophie here.

Community Steamroller Print Event...

6 Manton St Hindmarsh - Sun 28 April 2019

Who: Anyone interested in printmaking & community fun!
When: 11am-3pm, in 1hr sessions, Sun 28 Apr 2019
Venue: 6 Manton St, Hindmarsh SA
Tickets: $5 per person
Bookings essential: through Eventbrite
Eventbrite: www.eventbrite.com.au/e/community-steamroller-print-event-tickets-59419516373

On Sunday 28 April 2019 join in the fun as we ink and print a giant lino block with a road roller in the carpark at 6 Manton St Hindmarsh during our inaugural community print event.

For weeks, printmakers from around Adelaide and South Australia have been enthusiastically carving small lino blocks especially for us ... And we've been combining these small art works to make one giant lino print about the suburb of Hindmarsh.

'Steamroller printing' is fantastic fun. Around the world, printmakers use old steamrollers, road rollers, cricket pitch rollers and water drums to print large-scale relief blocks, made from anything from linoleum, to salvaged plywood and the recycled floors of old gymnasiums.

You are invited to enjoy the spectacle by reserving your place in one of the four viewing sessions on Sunday 28 April: 11am-12noon12noon-1pm1pm-2pm or 2-3pm. Places are limited, so please get in quick.

Tickets cost $5 per person. Primary aged kids (and younger) are free, but must be accompanied by their adult at all times. Tickets through Eventbrite.

Unique, hand-printed tea towels can be pre-ordered with your Eventbrite registration (see Additional Items at the bottom of the checkout page) or on the day. From late-May, tea towels will also be available for purchase through Pony & Cole cafe and Union St Printmakers. (Funds generated by tea towel sales will support next year's event.)

Proudly supported by Stone & Quoin StudioUnion St PrintmakersPony & Cole cafe and Koush Design.
Sponsored by the City of Charles Sturt's Westside Placemakers program.
Road roller generously provided by Coates Hire.

ACCUMULATE

Matt Brown
Opens: 6pm Wed 1 May. Until Sat 18 May 2019.
ACCUMULATE examines the non-authoritative potential of information systems with an installation/archive of hand-rendered and printed materials. Brown's archive is a taxonomy of visual data; ambient pieces of image and text which have been retrieved from the digital plane and then stored in physical formats. He is interested in the ambiguities created by grouping data, and how this challenges the homogenized ways we receive and consume information today.

Being Home

Bridgitte Willaims & Ellie Weckert
When: May to Jul 2019.
For Bridgitte Williams, ‘being home’ conjures up images of her father’s chair, the hands of a loved one, the places we can discuss big issues and feel safe, and a deep connection to the landscape of her birth. Williams has combined these ideas to create ‘snapshots’ that she might hang on a wall, to make wherever she is feel more like home.
Home is both where you find it, and somewhere deep within the heart.
Venue: Pink Heart Gallery, Women’s and Children’s Hospital, 72 King William Rd, North Adelaide SA
(the Pink Heart Gallery is on Level 2, Zone D, near the Hospital Cafe, on the way to the Women’s area)
Click for the WCH website.

William Kentridge: That which we do not remember

Opens: Sat 6 Jul. Until Sun 8 Sept 2019.
William Kentridge: That which we do not remember is an exhibition curated by the artist himself, tracing the arc of his thirty-year career in South Africa. Described as one of the most powerful voices in art today, Kentridge emerged as an artist during the apartheid regime in South Africa. This exhibition draws connections between the myriad aspects of his work including drawing, collage, stop-motion animation, performance, theatre, tapestry and sculpture. Memory, its excavation and erasure, lies at the heart of Kentridge’s practice: ‘One understands that there is a very narrow band of memory in which we can survive. If we forget everything, as in a kind of dementia or Alzheimer’s, it’s very difficult to function in the world. But if we remember everything, we’re also paralysed by trauma, by memory.’

Exhibitions About To Close

Time's up. These exhibitions are closing soon, and they might just be the ones you didn't want to miss...

Ways of Seeing: Recent Acquisitions

Until Mon 22 Apr 2019

This display features recent acquisitions to the Art Gallery of South Australia collection, including prints, drawing, photography, painting, decorative arts and artist’s books.

Ways of Seeing presents for the first time Helen Frankenthaler’s Madame Butterfly, 2000, a stunning colour woodcut printed from 46 woodblocks.

Frankenthaler was inspired to work in the woodcut medium after seeing ukiyo-e prints (‘pictures of the floating world’) while travelling in Japan. She transformed the possibilities of the medium by creating delicate wash affects with the assistance of the American master printer, Kenneth Tyler.

Other works in the display include artist books by Ed Ruscha, prints by Fred Williams, photographs by Andreas Gursky, Bill Henson and Tracey Moffatt, and a program of moving image works donated by Rick and Jan Frolich.

Ray of Light

Robyn Stacey
Until Sun 26 May 2019
Using the camera obscura, Sydney-based artist Robyn Stacey depicts South Australia as it has never been seen before. Translating from Latin to mean ‘dark room’ the camera obscura is an optical device of wonder, whereby the external world is trapped and inverted within the room.
"The magic of the camera obscura is that it makes us question what we take for granted - the everyday experience is presented upside down and in reverse, mimicking the way an image forms on the retina. In some photographs cars drive over the ceiling and the sky and clouds cover the floor… it’s like being in a movie where you are in the world but removed from it at the same time," says Stacey.

His prints depict everyday Bretons going about their daily activities and capture their distinctive clothing, customs and vibrant village life.

SA printmaking on tour...

She collects the beautiful things - Turbulent Nature

Chris de Rosa
Until Mon 6 May 2019
Melbourne

A collection of works on paper and prints by Chris de Rosa.

Chris de Rosa's art practice is informed by dystopian fictions of a future world covered in water where organisms may become even more “rich and strange”. Her work embodies philosophical ideas of the sublime as turbulent nature, where pleasure is derived from observing objects that threaten hurt to or destroy.

In de Rosa's own words, "Almost daily I amble along the south coast beaches where I live, foraging for the strange and the beautiful. Our liminal landscape is riddled with wondrous objects that are largely hidden from the gaze of the casual comber. The hyper-coloured, hyper-real images are a way of bringing these organisms into clear view to remind us just how precious and wondrous this environment is and of the strange beauty of these forms."

Melle Clovette (single-colour lino print), by this month's feature artist, Sophie Leterme.

Feature Artist

This month's feature artist is...

Sophie Leterme

Associate Professor Sophie Leterme is a marine biologist keen on saving the world's oceans from microplastics pollution, as well as an emerging printmaker (on the side), and a lover of cheese. (She's French.) She's also my friend and I'm a bit in awe of the way she combines science and art. All of us at Saturday afternoon lino class love her and are inspired by her work.

The images in this newsletter are prints from that Sophie has done on the side of her 'proper' job as a full time scientist. To see more of what she's up to, please click here. And to support her self-motivated, self-funded research campaign, click here. (Yes, atop of being a scientist and university lecturer, artist AND cheese lover, she's also initiating practical new research in her own time.) To contact Sophie - to volunteer to help out with her research and/OR to buy a print - please email her here. And to keep an eye on her on Instagram, go to Microplastics Warrior. (If you are a school teacher, Microplastics Warrior is GOLD!)

*Sophie's lino prints - and those of her friends at Mixed Inc - can be seen in the exhibition 'Between the devil and the deep blue sea' until the end of April 2019 at The Wheatsheaf Hotel.
