Electronic Eye

Sydney Video Makers club newsletter

Dear <<First Name>>, we are so glad that you are reading this :)
LINK to see club calendar.

The Electronic Eye, or EE for short, is the newsletter for the Sydney Video Makers (a.k.a. SVM) Club. You can peruse past edition of the newsletter on our website. We use this newsletter to advise of our upcoming club meetings and provide pertinent news items from our members. We do not wish to be a "me too" video magazine as there are plenty of those already on the web.

The EE is open to both financial members and non-members who are interested. If you wish, you can easily unsubscribe at anytime and if you got this forwarded to you, and want to subscribe you can do so via our club website.

Ian Cooke - Producer/Director/Documentarian/Film Maker

7:30pm Wednesday 24 April

This month Ian Cook, multi talented film maker, returns to provide insight into the DOP shot design process, including demonstrating Final Draft with Tagger and Gorilla shotlist software. This night promises to be a rare opportunity to see both the craft and the mechanics of this part of film making.

Through the President's Lens

Paul Szilard, SVM President 2019

I am writing this on Easter Sunday, which is probably the most significant day in the year for Christians everywhere, when they celebrate, not the Easter Bunny, but the resurrection of Jesus Christ who was crucified over 2,000 years ago. So to all who hold this festival Holy - I wish you a meaningful remembrance this weekend.

Also this time is the time to recap on NAB 2019 held in Las Vegas, USA during April 6-11. I have been impressed with the innovations and new products that keep coming up enticing our hard earned dollars. YouTube is full of announcements and reviews and it is hard to resist the build up of GAS (=Gear Acquisition Syndrome) that most of us suffer from!

To me the greatest pleasure is the blurring of "professional" and "prosumer" gear, whereby individuals are able to get more and more professional equipment at reasonable prices, and when consumer oriented gear can and is, used by professionals to get run-and-gun or B-Roll footage. In particular, I was taken by the new RØDE Wireless Go mic kit (see specs here), which comprises a lapel transmitter with a built in mic, roughly 45mm square 31gram shoe mountable receiver of similar dimensions.

It has a 7 hr use rechargeable Lithium battery and is the simplest to use. If you want to hide the TX pack, you can even plug in an external Lav (not supplied).

I shall be asking the Club's Committee to purchase 1 or maybe 2 of these to add to our club loan gear. To do this, however I need a show of hands, so send me quick e-mail if you would like to be able to borrow one of these units for free (Note: Loan equipment is only for financial club members' use).

Look this up on YouTube HERE.

President
Would you like the club to buy one of these? E-mail me if you do.

Gimbal at the end of the rainbow  - Part II

Did you know, you don't have to spend an arm and a leg to get a 4k gimbal kit, COMPLETE with camera?

I recently bought a DJI Osmo Pocket, which is a 4k 50fps capable gimbal camera, completely self contained - just add a micro SD memory card and you are ready to shoot.

This tiny unit has a face tracking gimbal camera (like on a drone), has a builtin rechargeable Lithium battery and can connect to an iPhone, for even greater flexibility. I got mine for just under $600 in Sydney. Next month I shall review some of the brilliant accessories that can make this into a professional camera in your pocket.
Cheapest Gimbal WITH camera on the planet? I love mine! :)
