  • South of Camelback on 20th Street on the West side of the street, near the Best Buy store.  The restaurant faces 20th Street.

October 2-6, 2019 356 Registry West Coast Holiday

High Desert Holiday

The Arizona Outlaws are going to host the 2019 West Coast Holiday in beautiful Flagstaff, Arizona. This follows an Outlaws tradition of hosting the WCH every ten years.

Registration is closed following a tremendous response. After five days, the event has reached capacity.

Save the dates of October 2-6, 2019.

This will be a big effort and will require the help of many dedicated volunteers to outdo the Holidays of previous years. If you would like to be a part of the Outlaws WCH team or would like to provide a sponsorship, please contact the Outlaws Holiday Committee at HighDesertHoliday@gmail.com.

President's Letter

Greetings Outlaws,
This month’s diatribe comes to you from Sunny Oceanside, California. One set of grandkids and their parents are visiting from the Midwest with lots of family events, beach, USS Midway, etc., on the agenda.  Life is good.

Downside is, with such a busy April, I had to miss our Spring driving event, the Bulldog Kliffs Rennen (BKR).  The BKR is named for a unique rock formation at the site of the premier event, years ago.  Scott and Deborah Evans put together this year’s event, featuring one of the most challenging Porsche roads on earth, the aptly named Devil’s Highway.   As the event unfolded I began to see photos on social media of another feature of the event, one that I recall encountering only once in almost 25 years of drives with the Outlaws – snow.  I’m guessing that a goodly number of drivers (and passengers!!) were reminded of the minimalist accommodations for weather in our quaint little cars, adding to the adventure and providing fodder for stories in years to come.  That said, I am told that Days 2 and 3 brought spectacular Spring weather among the wild flowers for the featured drive on Saturday and the return home on Sunday.   Thank you to Scott and Deborah for another excellent event!!!

On a different front, provisions for the October High Desert Holiday continue.  Following an unprecedented registration rush that filled the event to capacity and beyond, attention turned to Goodie Bag items and event options with longer lead times. The event co-chairs just received samples of the event shirts, poster, grill badges, pins, etc., and they are stunning. Our thanks go out to Steven Stacy and Brian Richardson for their exemplary support.

In closing, as Spring turns to Summer, I hope that your 356 gets to venture out of the garage, especially in the morning hours for the first Sunday gatherings. Tom Reyman has planned an excellent variety of drives and unique restaurant destinations not to be missed. Stay tuned to this Newsletter for monthly announcements.

And, as Harry Pellow used to say, “Keep the Faith”

Bulldog Kliffs Rennen 2019

Another great annual Bulldog Kliffs Rennen is in the book! This weekend trip ended up being a really fun drive despite starting out with a snow storm on the first day as we approached Show Low on our way to the trip headquarters in Springerville. What was Ferdinand thinking when he designed the defroster and windshield wipers of a 356? Everybody arrived safely and agreed that it was a tentative way to start the weekend.

After being re-planned several times because of road closures, we ended up driving the first planned route from Alpine through New Mexico on NM-180. This is a beautiful drive that took us to the Alma Grill in Alma, NM for lunch. After lunch we saddled up and crossed the border back to Arizona with Morenci as our next stop. This is also the start of the Devil's Highway, AZ-191. It is quite a sight driving the highway right through one of the largest open pit copper mines in the world.

The drive up AZ-191 definitely lived up to the hype. We had beautiful Arizona blue skies and literally the whole road to ourselves. If you have never driven this road you are missing what could be one of the best 356 drives in the state. All Outlaws thoroughly enjoyed the twisty drive (no guard rails!) with NM Outlaws David Gensler and Bill Oaks taking the "prize" getting to the Blue Point scenic view ahead of the 356 caravan. Kudos to all who rode in the passenger seat, I am sure a few left impressions in the floor board where the brake peddle isn't.

After catching our breath and enjoying the view we headed to Alpine for a group dinner at Foxfire at Alpine. They were expecting us and turned on the charm with a special Outlaws menu and really delicious food and drinks. Then back to Springerville for a some late evening pool and swapping stories about the day's adventure.

If you didn't come on this trip you missed a really good one... Get out and drive that 356! To see all of the photos from the trip, go to az356outlaws.org/bkr-2019/

Scott Evans
Matt Howard and crew put on a great open house and swap meet at Deluxe Customs, and even helped raise some money for Make A Wish. Several Outlaw's 356 cars were on display including a dramatic Before and After presentation of David Gill's new ride.

Lunch Drive to Tonto Verde Golf Club

Following the monthly gathering at Panera, Pete and Lynn Robinson arranged for a group lunch at their Tonto Verde Golf Club. It was a beautiful drive through the desert on a fine April Sunday and all participants enjoyed the gorgeous view and fine food on the patio of the Golf Club. Thank you Pete and Lynn for a great afternoon drive and lunch.
