Preparing for the ILC – Food and Tourism
If the ILC is realized, then researchers and their families will come here to Tohoku (northeast Japan) from all over the world. The local community will have to create not only a place for research, but also prepare hospitals, schools, and other things to be able to serve foreign residents. What sort of things should we do? There are a few things I personally am curious about: what types of foods to do researchers like (that you can’t get here)? What do they like to do on their days off? And how do we link that up with Tohoku businesses?

KEK to create a working group for Japan-USA-Europe to debate how to divvy up ILC costs
Japan’s High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK, in Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture), stated on April 3rd that it intends to establish a working group made up of Japanese, American, and European researchers in order to debate how to share the ILC costs internationally, and overcome technical challenges. They plan to begin debates in May, and submit a report to the Ministry of Science (MEXT) in September.

Politicians from Iwate and Miyagi’s prefectural assemblies make a petition to the LDP and FDMILC to realize the ILC
On April 18th, members of the Federation of Iwate and Miyagi Prefectural Assembly Members for the ILC travel to Tokyo to visit the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and Federation of Diet Members for the ILC (FDMILC, chair: Hon. Takeo Kawamura of the House of Representatives). There, they petitioned these two organizations to realize the ILC as quickly as possible.

Peace of mind when calling 119
What numbers do you call in an emergency? In Japan, we call 119 for ambulances and the fire department, and 110 for the police. The problem is, in many areas the operator only speaks Japanese, so in an emergency non-Japanese speakers have to attempt the call in Japanese or get someone else to call for them.

With its extended geographical length from south to north, Tohoku allows visitors to enjoy cherry blossoms from early April all the way to early May. Abounding with water from the melted snow, mountain hamlets burst with scenes of blooming flowers as pretty as a painting. Many visitors time their trips to coincide with the cherry blossom season, which usually lasts from mid-April to early May.
