Bristol Parks Forum Update

In this update:

Introducing Ella Hogg

As the all new Volunteer Coordinator for Bristol Parks, I’d like to introduce myself and give you all a bit of a background to my role and what it could mean for the Parks Forum and the city’s parks as a whole.

Coming from the charity sector, with a focus on working alongside communities, I am taking the Volunteer Coordinator role in a direction which I hope will enable those who might benefit most from volunteering in parks to access the opportunities to do so. As many of you are aware, the current volunteer population in parks across the city is poorly representative of the incredible diversity of the communities they belong to. I hope to address this through thorough community engagement and a holistic process of programme development to make opportunities as inclusive as possible.

In the first instance, I’ll be talking with people on the ground – Council Groundsmen who know the sites inside out, as well as experienced volunteer groups including park groups. From these conversations, I hope to draw out some priority areas for action or improvement and build good relationships. Alongside this, I’ll use park management plans and my existing network within Bristol to enable to the decisions made about volunteer activities to be well-informed.

Our Parks are a unique and invaluable asset to Bristol’s landscape and will be enhanced further by an increased, diversified volunteer population. As well as community style volunteering, one-off project style jobs will be excellent targets for corporate volunteers. These are another group I intend to make more of, giving them clear guidance and support throughout any volunteer activity undertaken.

I look forward to meeting members of the Parks Forum Committee, as an opportunity to share further ideas. By communicating with each other Bristol Parks can gain a greater insight into how we can make volunteering inclusive, integral and integrated within our city.

In my non-Council life, I am a cross country runner, dancer and lover of the Welsh mountains, where I grew up.

City Nature Challenge

A reminder that this takes place over this coming weekend – 26th to 29th April.
There are events listed on the website at:
https://www.bnhc.org.uk/festival-of-nature-type/city-nature-challenge/

Or you can take part yourself and send records of wildlife in your local area. Simply download the free iNaturalist app, search for the City Nature Challenge 2019: Bristol & Bath project and start uploading your wildlife photos.

Bristol and Bath will unite to compete with 160+ cities on seven continents as we show the world how amazing our region is for people and nature during the 2019 City Nature Challenge.

The map on the iNaturalist map shows all the records submitted – so as well as helping Bristol & Bath in the competition it is a great opportunity to highlight the importance of your park or green space for wildlife.

The app is very easy to use – if you don’t recognise the species you have photographed it will suggest options and other users of the app will also help with ID if you are still unsure.
