A “Radiographers life” in Radiotherapy… a monthly Blog by Duncan Hynd
April blog is “Duncan Hynd Associates is born”

Redundancy!

I woke up the following morning after being made redundant in the autumn of 1995, called an accountant, met them and created Duncan Hynd Associates Limited or more commonly known now as DHA. I then spoke with some of the companies that I had worked with in my past job and the majority were happy to sign up with me and my new company and so my life as a company director and business owner had started. The entrepreneurial spirit is still alive today and I am still involved in start-up companies and coming up with “good” ideas.

"Question of the month!"

What is a black hole and how does it relate to radiotherapy?

A Black hole pictured above was captured for first time in a space breakthrough in April 2019. A Network of eight radio telescopes around the world recorded the revolutionary image 55m light years from Earth.
The black hole itself – a cosmic trapdoor from which neither light nor matter can escape – cannot be seen. But the latest observations take astronomers right to its threshold for the first time, illuminating the event horizon beyond which all known physical laws collapse or do they?
Hawking radiation or black-body radiation is predicted to be released by black holes, due to quantum effects near the event horizon. It is named after the physicist Stephen Hawking, who provided a theoretical argument for its existence in 1974 by combining both Einstein’s laws of relativity and quantum mechanics to show that they do in fact glow and are not completely black.
Hawking radiation is true
electro-magnetic radiation and not thermal by nature and so by being formed by photons and other larger charged particles brings us neatly back to our profession!

"Did you know?"

Our section of interesting facts from our partners

Elekta’s technology has evolved over time – leading to many “firsts” in the industry. In its time, the first 80-leaf multileaf collimator [MLC] was a major Elekta innovation. The first linac heads used just four jaws, so they could only deliver square or rectangular fields. With the 80-leaf MLC, we could now deliver conformal fields to more closely approximate the tumor’s shape. That was followed by the low-leakage MLCi2 with 1.0 cm leaves, then the finer resolution Agility MLC with 0.5 cm leaves for really exceptional conformality. Read more.

Xstrahl Medical, global leader in superficial radiotherapy devices and advanced radiation research systems, is celebrating 20 years of delivering technical training courses on its X-ray treatment systems.
The courses are conducted several times a year at the company’s UK manufacturing hub in Birmingham.
When the course was initially conceived 20 years ago, it offered technical training to hospital staff in the UK, enabling them to carry out routine maintenance on Xstrahl’s orthovoltage and superficial radiation therapy machines. Over time, Xstrahl has expanded the syllabus and opened it to engineers from all over the world.
“Over the last 20 years, our trainers have taught hundreds of engineers how to maintain Xstrahl’s medical systems,” says operations director Steve Jackson. “This has since been extended to include our growing software product family, including oncology information software and treatment planning software, as well as connectivity to
third party software systems.”
Tracey Dimon, technical support director, who has been delivering Xstrahl’s technical training courses for the past 14 years, added, “It is extremely rewarding to train customers from all over the world on how to install, use and maintain our systems and software.”
Trainees from the UK, Netherlands and Australia were among the attendees at this week’s
20th anniversary training course. Pictured are the attendees alongside lead trainer Tracey Dimon and Xstrahl operations director Steve Jackson (centre).
