Energetic babies are invited to this lively storytime with a parent or caregiver. We'll share stories, songs, & activities to promote early learning, foster friendship, & have fun! Recommended for ages 0 to 18 months.

Toddler Movers & Shakers Storytime
Each Friday in May (except May 31st): 10:30 - 11 a.m.
Move, sing, play & read in this storytime for active toddlers & their parents or caregivers. We'll share fingerplays, music, and stories with many opportunities to shake our sillies out!  Recommended for ages 18 -36 months.

Family Storytime
Each Saturday in May:  11 - 11:30 a.m.
Learn how to be a better photographer. All experience levels welcome. Bring your cameras. For adults, high school, seniors.​

The History of Eastern State Hospital
Monday, May 6th: 7 - 8 p.m.
As part of Mental Health Awareness Month, two administrators from Eastern State Hospital will provide a historical overview and demystify assumptions around current psychiatric care. Information on acquiring records of past patients of the hospital will also be provided.

Friends of the Arboretum Plant Exchange

The exchange will begin at 10 a.m., with plants and other garden items to be unloaded starting at 9 a.m.

Walk Across Kentucky Tour
Tuesday, May 14: 6 - 7 p.m.
Join Arboretum Curator and Native Plants Manager, Emily Ellingson, on a tour of the Walk Across Kentucky.

Herb Container Garden Class
Thursday, May 16: 6 - 7:30 p.m.
Grow fresh kitchen herbs and learn the basics of container gardening.

Some events require an admission fee or donation. Please contact the Arboretum for additional information.

Recommended for children ages 2-10 and their families.

Join the LFUCG Environmental Commission the 2nd Tuesday of each month for Green Drinks, the Commission's monthly gathering to discuss environmental issues in Lexington. Learn more here.

Lexington's 4th Urban County Council District is diverse, with residents who care for their community. Nestled between Tates Creek and Nicholasville Roads, the 4th District spans from just south of the Arboretum all the way to the Jessamine County line. The District includes several schools and public parks, a public golf course, a hospital, and a public library. The District is home to a variety of neighborhood, condo, townhome and homeowner associations, and enjoys some of the area's most popular shopping and dining destinations.

On May 14th, ONE Lexington is partnering with Fayette County Public Schools and Commerce Lexington on the second annual Say YES Lex Youth Engagement Summit; an effort to educate adults on youth mentoring opportunities in Lexington.  Attendees can either attend the breakfast summit from 8:30 – 10:30 a.m. or the dinner summit from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.  Both events will take place at Southland Christian Church’s Richmond Road Campus.
 
The organizations featured during the Youth Engagement Summit will be there to speak to attendees about their need for more mentors and to share specific engagement opportunities.  The Youth Engagement Summit will allow attendees to identify a mentoring opportunity that is right for them!  Whether it’s spending time with a young person one day a week or one day a month, everyone interested in making a difference in the life of a young person is invited to attend!

Registration for the 2019 Senior Intern Program is underway. This is a free program that offers participants the opportunity to learn about their city government by talking to key decision makers, participating in class activities and visiting several government facilities.

To be a part of the program you must be a Fayette County resident, be age 50 or older, and you must pre-register.

Lexington has approximately 400 traffic signal boxes, which are typically just nondescript gray metal box. The Artistic Traffic Box Wrap program allows citizens and groups to propose artwork that will wrap one of the boxes and make it a piece of public art.

The brand new Footgolf course is open at Meadowbrooke Golf Course, 360 Wilson Downing Road. Meadowbrooke is Lexington's only short course, featuring holes ranging in length from 87 to 270 yards. Learn more about the course here.

Mulch Giveaway

Fayette County residents may collect up to one truckload of mulch, and is distributed on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.

311 Alerts is a system that allows residents to sign up for text or email notifications about city services and programs.

Citizens may register to receive notifications for:

  • Curbside waste collection schedule changes due to holidays or weather
  • Vacuum leaf collection dates and schedule
  • Special collection events such as Household Hazardous Waste Collections and Paper Shred
  • Volunteer events such as Reforest the Bluegrass and River Sweep.
  • Alerts when conditions are right for sanitary sewer overflows.

4th District Updates

Kentucky American Water will spend the next several weeks opening and flushing hydrants. This is part of the normal maintenance for the water distribution system and helps remove natural sediment that builds up in the pipes over time. See when work may be going on in your area using the online map.
