Action Alert: April 22, 2019
<<First Name>>,
In the midst of Passover, I'm reflecting more than usual on the road to freedom, and the importance of Tikkun Olam. There are opportunities and needs for all of us to participate, connect and be inspired. Please take a few moments to see what's coming up on May 1 in Raleigh and at JRC and throughout the coming month. Thanks for all you do, and Happy Pesach!

Support Students, Teachers & Schools
Teachers will be in Raleigh on May 1st fighting for five simple, practical, popular improvements in our schools:
- Fund Student Services to Meet National Standards, including Professional School Counselors, School Social Workers, School Psychologists, Nurses, and Library Media Coordinators.
- $15 Minimum Wage + 5% raise for all school workers + 5% COLA for retirees
- Expand Medicaid to improve the health of our students and families
- Reinstate state retiree health benefits
- Restore advanced degree pay
You can help this effort by:
- DISTRIBUTING school food to community locations throughout Durham on May 1 to make sure our students are fed! The priority is to ensure kids who would otherwise be hungry are fed. Several schools will serve as Child Nutrition Feeding Sites and DPS Child Nutrition Dept will offer meals to any child 4-18. The goal is to get the meals (made by DPS Child Nutrition) from the 13 feeding site locations (see below) into all of our neighborhoods in Durham.
- DONATING to the May 1st organizing effort! Visit capenc.org and click on ‘donate’ at the top.
- CONTACTING Joe Stapleton (joestapes@gmail.com) or Emily Ericson (emilyericson85@gmail.com) for more ways to get involved!
Events leading up to May 1:
- Community meeting tonight at EK Powe Elementary (913 Ninth St., Durham) at 6 pm.
- There will be a parent town hall meeting at Jordan High School on Tuesday April 23rd, 6:30-8 in the auditorium by the front entrance. More info on this facebook event
- Sign-making for May 1 at an art build on Saturday, April 27th at 10am at EK Powe Elementary (913 9th st). Come make signs and banners to carry in Raleigh and invite your community friends!
