The April Brush Up focuses on fluoride, describing how it works to prevent and repair tooth decay and offering tips Head Start staff can use to help parents understand the benefits of fluoride. OHRC partners with the Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors (ASTDD) and the Dental Quality Alliance (DQA) in our Center for Oral Health Systems Integration and Improvement (COHSII) consortium.
- Congratulations to ASTDD on another outstanding National Oral Health Conference! Thank you to conference planners and organizers, presenters, and those who visited us at OHRC's exhibit.
- ASTDD has released a new best practice approach report, The Role of Oral Health Workforce in Access to Care is now available on the Best Practice Approach Reports webpage. A best practice approach is defined as a public health strategy that is supported by evidence (including research, expert opinion, field lessons, and theoretical rationale) for its impact and effectiveness. This new report provides an overview of two components of access directly influenced by workforce development initiatives: accessibility and availability. ASTDD acknowledges Jen Sukalski for her partnership in the preparation of this report and Paul Glassman, Children's Dental Services, Apple Tree Dental and the states of Louisiana, Maryland and Vermont for submitting the examples included in this report.

EnRICH Webinar May 6: Sources and Utilization of Secondary Data for MCH Research
The Maternal and Child Health Bureau's (MCHB's) Division of Research within the Office of Epidemiology and Research organizes the Engaging Research Innovations and Challenges (EnRICH) webinar series. Emerging public health challenges require timely, multidimensional and evidence-based responses from Maternal and Child Health (MCH) programs, policy, and practice. Without sufficient data, it is difficult to address key and emerging MCH issues. This webinar will show how to identify data sources for MCH and health services research; explore the strengths and weakness of utilizing secondary datasets in MCH research; and access and utilize HRSA’s Uniform Data System and other surveillance data for MCH research. Article Reviews 2016 National Survey of Children's Health Data
The April 2018 cover story in the Journal of the American Dental Association is about children's access to oral health preventive services. Preventive oral health care use and oral health status among US children: 2016 National Survey of Children’s Health, from MCHB authors Lydie A. Lebrun-Harris, María Teresa Canto, and Pamella Vodicka, is an analysis of survey data to estimate children’s preventive oral health care use and oral health and investigate associations with child, family, and health care characteristics.
ADA Webinar May 8: Analgesic Prescribing in the Opioid Overdose Epidemic: A Milligram of Prevention is Better than a Pound of Rehabilitation
The American Dental Association (ADA) will host a webinar on the opioid overdose epidemic to help dentists learn how to deal with the root causes of the epidemic. Wednesday, May 8, 2019, from 2-3 pm ET. Register.
CDHP Resources on Aligning Policies to Improve Children's Access to Oral Health Care
The Children's Dental Health Project (CDHP) presents resources about 2018 guidance from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on how to better align dental payment policies and periodicity schedules to reduce barriers that families with children enrolled in Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) may face obtaining oral heath care. A policy brief, Medicaid Dental Guidance to States: An Opportunity to Aim for Equity is featured along with other tools, including a checklist, video, fact sheet, blog post, and archive of a 2018 webinar on the topic. Next Tuesday, April 30, from 2- 3pm ET, CDHP hosts a webinar, Promoting equity in children's dental care through Medicaid and CHIP. They have also posted an article by webinar speaker Kelly Whitener, "Four steps to improve children’s oral health care in Medicaid and CHIP."
MSDA 2017 National Profile and Symposium Registration
The Medicaid | Medicare | CHIP Services Dental Association (MSDA) has released the 2017 MSDA National Profile of State Medicaid and CHIP Oral Health Programs and announces registration for their annual symposium. MSDA works with state administrators to gather this information via an annual survey questionnaire. The profile will soon include the CMS 416 national and state reports and new administration and management categories. To access the information, create a free account from the national profile home page. The MSDA 2019 Symposium, Medicaid Transformation: How Value-Based Strategies are Making a Difference, will be held June 1-3, 2019, in Washington, DC.
HRSA Request for Information on Health Center Program
The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) is seeking input from the public on service area considerations that may inform HRSA decisions regarding health center program expansion through an existing health center’s addition of new service delivery sites. They also solicit ideas and suggestions from the public related to these topic areas. One factor of interest is parameters for unmet need. This is an opportunity to share how an expansion of services could address oral health needs of the underserved in your community. Share with local partners and read more in the announcement and the FAQs. Currently the announcement is in a preview period, after which HRSA will accept public feedback for a period of 60 days. NHSC Scholarship Program
The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) has released its 2019 application and program guidance for the NHSC scholarship program, which awards funds to health profession students pursuing careers as primary care providers. The application will close on Thursday, May 16, 2019 at 7:30 PM ET. Scholars receive one year of financial support (up to four years) for each year of service at an NHSC-approved site. After completion of graduation and any postgraduate training, recipients fulfill their service commitment at one of more than 20,000 NHSC-approved sites. This video features NHSC member clinicians describing their experiences.
