This Month at LMCC – May 2019

This year, 37 talented artists with ties to LMCC have donated works of photography, mixed media, etching, fiber arts, and more!

Proceeds support artist residencies, grant funding for neighborhood arts organizations and LMCC's public programs.

We're thrilled to announce the dates and lineup of our 2019 River To River Festival, Downtown New York City’s completely free summer arts festival.

River To River Festival
June 18 through June 29

Performances and events celebrate artistic and creative diversity in all its forms throughout spaces in Lower Manhattan. This year's festival encourages the discovery of what arises when we all slow down. 

Participating artists and projects include: Elia Alba, Carol Becker, Black Gotham Experience, Drag Queen Story Hour, Mark Epstein, NIC Kay, Night at the Museums, Sarah Michelson, Jennifer Monson, Yoko Ono, Ernesto Pujol, Pam Tanowitz, Tribeca Art+Culture Night, Rooftop Films, Workspace Open Studios, and Ezra Wube.

Artist-in-Residence Events
See the work of our current Workspace residents throughout NYC! 
NIC Kay will perform you black + bluised [exercise 5 in getting well soon] at Abrons Center May 23 - 25. NIC Kay's project is a triptych of performative duets centering around absence and loss. These hour long duets will be presented over the course of three evenings.

Asif Mian will showcase new 
works from the RAF project as a part of Always, Already, Haunting, "disss-co," Haunt, a group exhibition at The Kitchen. The opening reception is on May 24, at 5–8pm and is on view until June 15. 

Kenneth Pietrobono,
along with other artists, take over a storefront on 80 Nassau Street as a part of the group show, Conditions of Exchangecurated by Abigail Simon and Esther Boesche. The exhibition will be on view until May 16.
Zac Hacmon's UNBORN is on view at mhPROJECT nyc until June 2, 2019. UNBORN is a site-specific installation for mh PROJECT nyc where Hacmon uses architecture as a mediator to disorient the viewer through reconstruction and blurring the boundaries between public and private spheres. ⁣

Jennifer Bartlett is one of the founders Zoeglossia, a literary organization that creates an inclusive space for writers with disabilities. Zoeglossia invites poets from all backgrounds to annual retreats to learn and develop from prominent writers who also have disabilities. Their 1st Annual Conference is May 16 - 19, 2019 in San Antonio, TX.
May Grantee Events
This month's grantee events include shows and performances across all disciplines. See the hilarious exploration of teenage revolution at Spicy Witch Production's The Virtuous Fall of the Girls from Our Lady of Sorrows or enjoy a performance of both Korean traditional music and contemporary art inspired by Buddhism at the Crossing Boundaries Concert Series.

Alumni Highlights
Elia Alba's book, The Supper Club, is now published and launched! The Supper Club documents Elia Alba’s six-year multifaceted project addressing issues ranging from post-black identity to the intersectional entanglements of gender, race, and privilege. Published by Hirmer and the Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation, copies of The Supper Club are available for purchase

Extended Life 2015-2016
Olalekan Jeyifous and Amanda Williams were selected to design the first monument commissioned under She Built NYC. The monument titled “Our Destiny, Our Democracy,” will honor Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman elected to serve in Congress. The monument will be installed in Prospect Park in 2020.

Olalekan Jeyifous: Workspace 2004-2005
LaToya Ruby Frazier was featured as the cover piece in New York Times Magazine for her photo essay, The End of the Linewith text by Dan Kaufman. This profound essay recounts the stories of workers after the shut down of the Lordstown General Motors plant.  

LMCC: Workspace 2009-2010
Simone Leigh's exhibition Loophole of Retreat is now on view at the Guggenheim Museum as a winner of The Hugo Boss Prize 2018. The series of new sculptures exhibit Leigh’s commitment to honoring the agency of black women and their power to inhabit worlds of their own creation. Loophole of Retreat will be on view until October 27, 2019.
