Community Spotlight

Porter- Billups Leadership Academy

Former Regis University Men’s Basketball Head Coach and Colorado Sports Hall of Famer Lonnie Porter came from “humble beginnings.” By that, he means he “grew up poor.”

Born to Mississippi sharecroppers in 1943, Porter and his family moved to Indiana when he was 5. He quickly discovered basketball in a state where the sport is king. Not content to simply play ball, Porter also demonstrated his leadership chops when he was elected student body president in sixth grade. He applied his fledgling entrepreneurial skills to help his fellow students earn $.35 a week for the school’s snacks: milk and cookies, with chocolate milk on Thursdays.

In 1996, Porter founded the Lonnie Porter Leadership Academy to support disadvantaged Denver-area youth develop their leadership potential. When Chauncey Billups joined in 2006, it became the Porter Billups Leadership Academy (PBLA)

Regis University’s Northwest Denver campus hosts a three-week academic-based leadership development program. Each summer, rising 4th through 12th graders participate in programs that challenge the students with cultural, economic, environmental and social curricula.

PBLA develops skills and is a way for students to prove themselves through hard work, dedication. and achievement. Students who successfully complete seven years of PBLA and qualify for admittance are provided scholarships for tuition and fees to Regis University. Since its founding, the PBLA has served hundreds of students, all having graduated high school.

“People will forget the basketball piece," Porter said. "It’s the PBLA that will carry on after I’m gone. It will make an even bigger impact on lives than basketball ever will.”

 Around the Community
The Regis Community Council, Regis University and WalkDenver partnered for a “Pop-Up Demonstration” at the intersection of 50th Ave. and Federal Boulevard on Saturday, April 27, to bring attention to one of the most dangerous stretches of road in Colorado. By using easy and inexpensive solutions, we temporarily reduced speeds, improved pedestrian safety, and made Federal a safer and more pleasant street on which to travel. Read more about the event and the goals for more transit safety on the Streets Blog Denver website.
Smiley Branch Library looking for feedback
