Dear CNF Partners,

Last week, the Advancing Care for Exceptional Kids Act (ACE Kids Act) was signed into law, as part of the larger H.R. 1839 Medicaid Services Investment and Accountability Act of 2019. This is exciting news for families!

The ACE Kids Act was created so that families whose children have complex health conditions, who are also accessing Medicaid, will be able to more easily coordinate their care across different providers, and even different states.

As many families in the child neurology community know, complex conditions can be difficult to manage, so any help in simplifying access to treatment is a big win.

According to the Children's Hospitals Association, this act, "creates a national framework to improve data collection and quality of care. It will also allow for better coordination for out-of-state care, and spur innovation and the sharing of best practices between states."

CNF's Executive Director and CEO, Amy Brin, shares additional context about the ACE Kids Act:

"Improving the coordination of care is essential in delivery of quality care for children living with special health care needs. Not only does it just make sense to support families in the daily management of these conditions, it also has proven health and economic benefits. It actually saves money, time, and resources when coordination of care is well employed with this patient population. PLUS – kids’ health improves! Less emergency department use, more medication and therapy adherence, and improved family satisfaction! CNF salutes the acknowledgement of demonstration projects that illuminate the effectiveness of care coordination, and calls for more data to leverage this changing tide."
