From the Office

Hi Everyone

I have to admit I am a bit of a crow, I like shiny things, they catch my eye. I am also naturally drawn to geometry, so imagine my revelation when I stumbled upon the work of Iranian artist Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian who passed away this week. Farmanfarmaian was best know for her mirrored geometric works; sculptures that reflect their surroundings and catch every bit of light in a room. This love was cultivated in her through a visit to a mosque in Iran, this glowing twinkling space sparked something in the artist that she would spend decades chasing. There is a mystic connection in Islam to geometry and Farmanfarmaian's works have monumental feeling to them because of it, they are austere and beautiful. Embracing tradition while making it accessible has allowed her to create timeless work. I can only imagine what it is like to see the work in person. How does your work take tradition and reinterpret it? Does geometry spark your creativity? Does faith influence your practice?

Contemporary Camouflage
Rebecca Hannon

March 8th - May 5th
A dazzling display has taken over the Mary E. Black Gallery. Local contemporary jeweller Rebecca Hannon has been playing with notions of concealing-and-revealing following her research into the extra ordinary history of Dazzle Camouflage used in WWI. This bright and visually stimulating camo was designed to confuse the senses of three dimensional forms and distance. Rebecca Hannon will envelope the viewer in an immersive installation, covering the walls with patterns of Dazzle Camo to create a back drop for her graphically stunning jewellery.

Join Rebecca for a workshop, Finding Form and Connection

Inspired by the dramatic mirrored Shah Cheragh mosque Iranian artist Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian made a name for herself creating mirrored geometric sculptures. Farmanfarmaian is keenly aware of the mystical implications of geometry in Islamic art. “When I discovered the mirror mosaics, I realized that nothing is done spontaneously; it is all a calculation of geometry and design," she has explained. "If you divide a circle at three points, it will be a triangle. In Islamic design, the triangle is the intelligent human being. If you divide the circle at four points, it will be a square, and it can be North, South, West, and East. The five sides of the pentagon are the five senses. The six sides of the hexagon are the directions: forward, backward, right, left, up, down. The hexagon also reflects the six virtues: generosity, self-discipline, patience, determination, insight, and compassion.” Farmanfarmaian died this week at 97. Craft Nova Scotia Member Exhibition 2019 - Age of Aquarius
Deadline: Friday, July 26th, 2019

The Woodstock Music & Art Fair took place over four days in August 1969.  Over 500,000 people came to a dairy farm in Bethel, NY to see and hear performances from the likes of Jimi Hendrix, the Grateful Dead, the Who, Janis Joplin, and Jefferson Airplane. Woodstock is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2019, and we want to celebrate too.  To that end, the theme for our 2019 members’ exhibition will be Age of Aquarius.  An invited panel of three jurors will select the works to comprise the exhibition from amongst those submitted in response to the Call for Entries.

The exhibition will be juried. Jurors have not yet been confirmed for this exhibition. The exhibition will be open to Craft Nova Scotia members only; new members may join the organization for the purpose of entering the exhibition.

You are innocent when you dream
Gary Castle
Established artist Gary Castle presents his recent altered and manipulated photographs, which bring the fragments of dreams into focus. Castle was inspired by author and artist Peter London's quote, "There is a lovely moment that occurs often as we slide into sleep, at the transitional zone between soggy wakefulness and near sleep. Parades of incomplete images swarm this way and that... When we lose the hold with which self-conscious perception glues us to the physical world, we allow the quality of mind that spontaneously generates imagery to do its work".
