Olly Olly oxen free! I remember this child’s catch phrase to free up those who were still hidden during a game of hide and seek, giving them a free pass to return without the fear of being captured or tagged. Can you see how it applies to the month of May? The window closes for frost warnings traditionally around the 10th or so, freeing up gardeners to plant at will all the different varieties of tender plants without penalty. Freedom, freedom at last! Gardeners start your engines. Of course there are exceptions. We take advantage of this time frame as well at the greenhouses. We aren’t as careful when moving our plants from the heated greenhouses to the more primitive cold frames for a good hardening off. We’re kind of weather geeks around here and we have great resources to let us peer into the future to minimize the risk.  It’s not always perfect.  I remember one such time in early June many, many, years ago unrolling blankets in 100 foot increments to protect tender annuals that we assumed would be fine because it was well after the traditional freeze date.  What a pain. And if my memory serves me right it was mostly precautionary but we couldn’t sleep well if we didn’t.
As for the plants that we have here the Mother’s day baskets are the hot ticket item.  Our best selection and availability is definitely towards the beginning of the month.  We continue to look for ways to grow more baskets to accommodate your love affair with them.   The mixed baskets tend to be the most popular and we are growing more this year.  Often times they do have in their formula tender plants.  Most of our deluxe annuals are peaking in both size and color.   Exotic varieties of annuals such as deluxe coleus are very popular and for good reason.  They make a striking display of presence and color and give shade gardeners a nice option of decorative foliage.  They are nice to frame other lower growing annuals with to create nice depth and texture.  There are many more examples of cool plants to be had this time of year.  Whatever your eyes feast upon you can pretty much plant without weather precaution.  And when we reach that magical date beyond the frost window, well, Olly Olly oxen free to all the gardeners!
See you soon,
