FRIDAY LETTER

New Trail Signs in MTNP
Ten new trail signs have been installed at strategic trail junctions within the Mission Trail Nature Preserve. The new signs are a significant improvement over the old, faded or missing signs. In conjunction with the Preserve’s trail map brochure and entry signs, the new signs will help visitors identify the trail they are on and when they are connecting to a different trail.

Easter Bunny found Guilty of Defacing City Property

City Forester Mike Branson says Goodbye
“I wish to thank all of the Carmel-by-the-Sea community and all City staff for allowing me to have an interesting and productive career during my 38-year tenure working in the forest, on the beach, and in the parks. I will miss you all. Be Seeing You!”- Mike (Shown with his wife, Joy, at his retirement party.)

Preparation for Stump Removal
This week, Public Works’ Jaime Aquino and Dom Marquez removed concrete curbs and sidewalks sections adjacent to seven tree stumps and spars in the business district. These trees were damaged during the severe storms earlier this year. Removing curbs and sidewalks is often necessary to allow for complete removal of the tree stumps by the stump grinding machine. Community Tree Service will be the City’s stump grinding contractor for this particular project. The resulting hole will be temporarily back filled, and new trees will be planted in the near future.

  2. Two more stakes were added to the tree in photo #2
  3. The tree was relocated to the left by several feet
  4. Only the tree in photo #1 is a significant tree

PG&E Gas Pipeline Paving Update
At long last, the new 6-inch PG&E gas pipeline installation, along 0.9 miles of City streets in the northern portion of the City, is coming to an end. This week, the east half of the pipeline alignment was paved, including along Camino Del Monte, San Carlos Street, and Fourth Avenue west to Lincoln Street. Preliminary paving is also underway on the westerly half of the project, primarily along Fourth Avenue. This asphalt paving is mitigation for the physical damage that the gas pipeline construction caused the community, and was a requirement of the special Conditions of Approval for PG&E’s Encroachment Permit. The total cost to pave the entire pipeline route is estimated to be nearly $2 million.

Several calls were received by alert citizens wondering why crews are jack hammering through brand new pavement just days after it was paved. We get it - more disruption and loud noises, as if it will never end. Utility trucks, compressors, and jackhammers are needed to punch holes in the new asphalt so that metal utility valve cans, which were paved over, are raised up to the finished pavement surface. Valve cans provide access to water and gas pipelines under the road. Concrete rings are then poured around these valve cans (see photo). Following this “raising iron” operation, new thermoplastic striping and pavement markings will be installed, and berms along the edges of the roadways will be repaired.

And congratulations to Mary Schley for receiving the President's Award from the American Culinary Institute.  The awards gala will be held on May 19, 2019 at the Intercontinental Clement on Cannery Row.

The Big Sur International Marathon is Sunday, please be patient and expect some traffic delays when leaving the Village.  Our visitors for this event are generally very respectful before the event, and too tired to create issues after the event.  Nevertheless we welcome all entrants.

Take good care.
