Commerce Court Project Manager, Construction Services
At Commerce Court, there are always a number of capital projects underway as we strive to both maintain and improve the complex. This area of responsibility falls under the care of the members of the Construction Services team, including Magdalena Chromicz-Panarese, one of our Project Managers. Magdalena oversees and ensures that construction projects run smoothly from start to finish and serves as a point of contact for general contractors, trades, tenants, and the Property Management team. She is responsible for tenant project oversight including the review of drawings, permits, and building procedures, and most recently oversaw the completion of a back-to-base office space project on the 19th floor of the West Tower. Should you see Magda around the complex, please feel free to say hello!

Earth Week Celebrations Shed Light on our Food’s Footprint

Thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating Earth Week 2019 which featured The Global Plate: An Exploration. The informative and interactive exhibit shed light on five common food choices that are linked to environmental degradation such as wildlife loss, deforestation and carbon emissions, and offered solutions and easy alternatives that help lessen our footprints.

Visitors also had the chance to test their food footprint knowledge with our Earth Week quiz for a chance to win some great prizes that celebrate sustainable foods. Congratulations to our quiz winners:
• M. Lai: A cooking class for two at Dish Cooking Studio
• R. Chung: $100 gift card to Planta Restaurant
• S. Sherban: $50 gift card to Café Belong

Diet & Planet Lunch and Learn

On Thursday, April 25 we welcomed over 50 tenants to the Concourse Lounge to learn about the environmental footprint of our diet. Speaker Brent Lockridge of Sustainable Nutrition described how making environmentally friendly choices can also benefit our nutrition and wellness.

Attendees enjoyed a healthy lunch from Jimmy The Greek and a complimentary jar of honey from the Commerce Court beehives.

Happy News: A New View of the Moon

Last year in Los Angeles, Wylie Overstreet decided to share his unique view of the moon with members of the public and set up his telescope in different parts of the city, encouraging passersby to take a look. With filmmaker Alex Gorosh on hand to capture people’s reactions to what they saw, Wylie was able to compile a short video that was chosen “Staff Pick” on Vimeo for the month of March. Check it out here and be pleasantly surprised.

Wellness tip of the month:

May 6th to 12th is Mental Health Week

Bumble Bees at Risk

A recent CBC News article shares the alarming findings of York University researchers who determined the American bumble bee is facing imminent extinction from Canada. The bumble bee decline is attributed to disease transmission between farmed and wild species; habitat loss, pesticide use and climate change.

Bumble bees are important pollinators humans relay on to grow food such as apples, tomatoes, blueberries and legumes. Pollinators also help the growth of trees, shrubs and wildflowers, making them an essential part of our ecosystem.

What can you do?
Become a citizen scientist by recording your sighting through Bumble Bee Watch
Create a Bumble Bee friendly habitat by planting flowers and shrubs native to Ontario

Did you know? Commerce Court is doing its part in helping urban pollinators by hosting two honey bee hives on the 7th floor roof of the North Tower. Look for information about our summer and fall bee related activities.
