Oh, hi friends!
Do you make the people around you better?
And/or do the people around you make you better?
I ask because I'm working with a composer right now for my next-to-last assignment for my musical theater workshop, and he's so sharp and thoughtful and generally on top of everything, and I've noticed the positive side effects. It makes me want to be better, sharper, and on top of everything, too.
I think there's a way to do this by not being demanding or having impossible standards. You don't scream BE AS GOOD AS ME. Instead, maybe, you communicate it by sticking to your own standards.
We mirror the people around us. So when you're not trying to set an example, you do — and everyone around you benefits, too.

PS — Oh, hi! If you’re new to this newsletter and found me via Smarter Living, hi and welcome! I’m Kara Cutruzzula, a journalist, playwright, and lyricist living in Brooklyn.
This newsletter generally arrives in your inbox every weekday at 7:30 a.m. EST (except for today, of course) and covers topics including productivity, creative process, the arts, and usually includes songs or videos or books I think you’ll like.
I’m reaching for my own brass rings and hope you are, too. Respond and say hi anytime—I love hearing from people! And if this isn’t your cup of (ginger) tea, no hard feelings, you can unsubscribe below.
Looking forward to grabbing those Pulitzers together.
