Please subscribe to receive progress updates on the Downtown Programme

Week ending 28 April 2019

The Downtown Programme will create a generous and welcoming destination along the water’s edge that is recognisably Tāmaki Makaurau. Key projects are being accelerated within the programme. Subject to resource consent they will be completed by 2021, in time for the America’s Cup.

We are currently in preparation mode for the next construction phase of the Downtown Programme. In late May, we expect to start work on the big, transformational Downtown Programme projects; strengthening Quay Street’s seawall, enhancing the streetscape, and redeveloping the ferry basin. You can anticipate a flurry of activity once these get underway.

In the meantime, this weekly newsletter will keep you up to date on progress, how you may be affected and who you can contact.

Current Project Phase
Stormwater drainage installation
Seawall enabling works

WORKS INVOLVED

Stormwater Drainage:
Involves pavement excavation and concrete cutting works and temporary relocation of cycle lane onto the footpath between Lower Hobson Street and Lower Albert Street.

Seawall Enabling works:
This work involves the installation of piling sleeves and casings, and also to further develop the final sea wall design within this section. Re investigation in this area is required due to the sheer volume of services under the road.

Traffic management:
Quay Street reduced to one lane each way. Cycle lane is maintained but may shift slightly due to works. Footpath access maintained but may be narrower in areas due to works.

Mitigation:
Noise fencing will be in place during concrete cutting and other loud activities. Traffic Controllers onsite to assist movements.

Something for the calendar.....

Attracting more than 63,000 visitors in 2018, Viaduct Harbour is thrilled to announce the return of Bright Nights, the immersive lighting experience taking over the waterfront precinct from 8-12 May 2019.

The immersive public event will see the Viaduct Harbour transformed into a visual wonderland, with an estimated 100,000 visitors expected to weave their way through the extended line-up of luminary installations. The underlying theme of this year's event is sea life and sustainability.

A free event for all ages, visitors are encouraged to embark on Bright Nights via one of the two trails starting via Waitemata Plaza at Customs Street East, or outside the Viaduct Events Centre on Halsey Street, both of which land in the heart of Viaduct’s hospitality hub, forming the intersection of the two immersive trails.

Bright Nights at Viaduct Harbour is live from 6-10pm each night from 8-12 May 2019 and will end on the Sunday (Mother's Day) with a thrilling fireworks display
