Articulation committees play a critical role in facilitating smooth student mobility between institutions in the BC Transfer System. There are 66 articulation committees currently recognized by BCCAT. They exist for most disciplines or programs that are delivered in the BC Transfer System.

FRIENDS OF BCCAT

* Meet Roger Barnsley *

Roger Barnsley has been an active supporter of BCCAT over this years, working from a rich and long-running experience of the BC Transfer System.

As president of the University College of the Cariboo (UCC), he oversaw the transformation of the institution as it transitioned to "Thompson Rivers University" (TRU) in 2005. Through his leadership and vision, TRU developed and implemented an Aboriginal education plan in consultation with First Nations communities, and addressed the educational and training needs of a wide range of students from BC, other provinces, and beyond.

His own story began when he attended secondary school in Trail, BC, and then studied for his Bachelors degree at Victoria College (which later became the University of Victoria). Roger was appointed as a member of the Council (1998-2004) and later as Co-Chair (2011-2017).

Having lived and worked in seven different provinces, he came to recognize the value of the flexibility of the BC Transfer System for supporting access and success for post-secondary students. He also stresses the importance of continuing to address accessibility issues for students, particularly those facing obstacles, whether cultural, financial, academic or geographical.

Roger reflects on his own experiences and the unique qualities of the BC Transfer System. Click here to see the one-page summary.

"I have always been delighted and proud to have been a part of a provincial process that creates full credit transfer opportunities for all students."

"I sincerely believe that as a result of the credit transfer system and the work of BCCAT, the BC post-secondary system stands out as exemplary in Canada."

DID YOU KNOW...?

When BCCAT was first established, in 1989, student transfer in BC tended to be unidirectional, with students typically transferring from a two-year program into a university.

In recent years, we have seen that student mobility patterns have changed markedly.  Student Transitions Project (STP) findings have indicated a much more complex, multilateral pattern, where students move among and between a variety of different post-secondary institutions in many different directions (see image below).

The rate of mobility has been fairly constant in recent years, with 54,000+ (17%) students moving each year. Research also shows:
  • students transfer more than 400,000 credits every year;
  • over 45% of degree graduates attended >1 institution; and
  • 83% of students are satisfied with their transfer experience.
"The complexity of these different pathways completely flipped my thinking: education isn't a progression from point A to point B - it's a process that is fluid, complex, dynamic, and individual." - Daniel Jacinto, UBC student

RECURRENT REPORTS:
Survey of Mobile Students

BCCAT is in the process of surveying mobile students to ensure the transfer system meets their needs. When last surveyed in 2011, the majority of students who transferred were satisfied with their experience at both their original and subsequent institutions.

The 2019 version of the Survey is currently in the field. Stay tuned for its results in the upcoming months!

* TI PROJECT FUNDING *

BCCAT will be reviewing the Transfer Innovations (TI) funding program over the next year and providing recommendations to Council in 2020. In the meantime, TI funding will be on hiatus. Currently funded transfer innovations projects and proposals underway will be unaffected.
