April 18, 2019 - Issue 121
Dear <<First Name>>,

On this Maundy Thursday, we remember the Last Supper Jesus shared with his disciples. The image above was created in 2009 by John August Swanson and is called “The Last Supper.” I was moved by his description of what this image meant to him:

I am inspired by a person’s ability to share food with others and the community that grows from this sharing. I see, in the Last Supper, a scene in which the sacred embraces the ordinary. Our daily bread becomes holy when it is shared. The fruit of our labor becomes the fruit of the Spirit when it is shared.

“We cannot love God unless we love each other,” says Dorothy Day, “and to love each other we must know each other in the breaking of bread and we are not alone anymore. Love comes with community.”

Over the years, I kept drawing and developing other sketches of the Last Supper, but I kept returning to this initial image. At a round table there is no hierarchy of seating. No one can be seated at the “head of the table.” It is a welcome table. No one can be excluded from the conversation. Jesus is at the table as both host and companion. The circular table draws us all into the scene, giving the viewer a feeling of being included in the meal. We are all participating in this supper.

His vision of that Last Supper reflects so much of what makes our weekly practice of Holy Communion at PPMCC so special. Our table is a welcome table. No one is excluded from joining us. Jesus is both our host AND companion. Communion and community go together. Tomorrow evening we will have our Holy Week service and we will share a simple meal together. We will remember that last meal the disciples and Jesus ate, and we will consider how gathering as community together around food nourishes both our bodies and spirits. I hope you can join us.

Peace,

Exploring the Bible with Pastor A.
An Online Bible Study

Tuesdays from 7-8 pm
May 7 – June 25
Cost: $20*

Many people struggle to know how to even start reading the Bible.  It can be difficult to understand, and sometimes hard to see how it connects with life in the 21st century.  Some of us only have learned how to read the Bible literally, while others have never even opened the covers of a Bible.  Pastor A. will offer tools that can help us begin to uncover the richness of the Bible, as well as spiritual practices that help us connect not just with our heads, but also our hearts and spirits.

This will be an ONLINE-only class. We will be using an online web conferencing platform that has Android and iOS apps, as well as a phone call-in feature. Once you register for the class, you will receive more information about how to set up your smartphone, tablet, or computer for the class. Pastor Alycia will also be available to help you troubleshoot any issues.

No previous experience or understanding of the Bible required! Bring your questions and curiosities. If you don’t have a Bible and are considering purchasing one, Pastor Alycia recommends the Common English Bible translation. The publishers offer several excellent study Bibles that use the CEB translation. You can also read the CEB for free on BibleGateway.  To sign up, please contact Pastor Alycia.

*As always, don’t let financial issues stop you from participating. Scholarships are available upon request.
