How Modern Mountain Bike Sizing/Geometry Can Fight Biomechanics

Comparing 2019 mountain bike frame geometry with 1999 mountain bike makes you wonder if they came from the same planet.  While 1999 mountain bikes had steep head tubes and long stems, a 2019 mountain bike uses a slack head tube angle and a short stem to help improve descending stability and handling. This is a good innovation.  However, when it comes to bike sizing and reach, sometimes fit fundamentals have been lost in the process.

This new article explains why you may want to ride a size bigger mountain bike today than you did years ago.

If you want more to think about in regards to pedaling mechanics, we wrote about how MTB crank length is too long on many mountain bikes for many riders (short to average height people in particular) last year.

Remember, the best way to take the guesswork out of bike selection is to get fit first, before you buy!

Bike Brands Fit Werx Carries

There are a couple hundred bike brands available in the U.S. at this point.  We can't, and wouldn't want, to carry them all.  This being said, we carry or have access to more bike brands than many people think.

We would like to be the place you buy your next bike.  If you are interested in something, whether we list it or not, let us know.  We're happy to let you know how it fits you regardless and whether we can provide it.

A list of the more common bike brands we work with can be found here.

Struggling Fixing Flats?

While wider modern rims and innovations like tubeless tires have certainly improved the way bikes ride notably, they aren't always particularly easy to change.  In fact, it is recommended that you don't take the tire on and off the rim the way you may have learned to change tires on narrower rims and standard clincher tires.  We recently updated this "how to change a tire" articles to reflect the reality of working with 2019 wheels and tires.  While the article explains how to install a tubeless tire, these concepts apply to using tubes on wide rims as well. We hope you don't get a flat, but we hope this helps if you do!

Tri Bikes

In case you missed it, there is a lot to talk about in tri/TT bikes in 2019.    Read our overview article that talks about what each tri bike brand that we carry is doing here.

Cervelo has introduced two significant new models - the P3X and the P5 Disc.  If you are a triathlete, you should be aware of these two progressions of Cervelo technology that push the performance envelope open more and bring costs down at the same time.

Felt has expanded the world beating IA model range and brought disc brake technology down in price.

We now carry Quintana Roo.  QR has arguably done more than any other company to drive the price of disc brakes on tri bikes down.

Don't forget Parlee.  The TTiR was the first production disc brake tri bike on the market and remains one of the nicest riding bikes you could possibly be on.  At $5500 with Ultegra, the starting price to be riding this true superbike is also well below what many people think.

Zipp Trade In Speed Up Program.  A Great Way to Go Out with the Old and Come in with the New.

Do you have Zipp wheels now?  Would you prefer to be riding on a new pair?  A pair of Zipp’s with all the latest technology (wider rims, dimpling, better braking, disc brake compatibility, less side wind effect…)?

Are you not getting a new disc brake bike because you have nice caliper brake wheels?

Is the challenge of getting rid of your old Zipp wheels a reason you aren’t getting a new pair?

We offer a program that can help you get new Zipp wheels and will give you money for your old pair.  Introducing the Zipp Trade-In Speed-Up Program.

The basics of the program are that you contact a Fit Werx location.  We will then ask a few questions and submit a form.  Within seconds of submitting, we can give you the value that Zipp will offer on your wheel(s) toward a new pair.   If you accept the offer, you can leave with a new set of Zipp wheels (or having ordered a new set).

One year old or 20 years old, all Zipp wheels are eligible for the program.  Obviously newer wheels will be worth more, otherwise the only stipulation is that the carbon rims must be in good shape – not structurally damaged.

This is a great way to convert disc brakes without having to sell your old wheels to do so.  It is also a great way to simply get on the latest technology.  Zipp wheels may look similar to ten years ago, but they have come a long way in the past few years in terms of how they ride.
