Farmer Feature

A new Ag Sounder newsletter column focuses on information, resources, and perspectives direct from farmers, for farmers. In this edition of “from the farmer’s field”, we hear from Jim Johnson of Johnson Berry Farm about his berry farm and processing operation, and how he has been able to find success through food processing. Read the column here!

Lewis County Allocates $800,000 for Grain Storage Facility

The Lewis County Commission awarded $800,000 to an ambitious grain storage and transload facility project at the Port of Chehalis, a mark of serious buy in to the port’s vision of the county’s agricultural future. The facility would create several grain production & marketing opportunities in the region. Read the full article here.

Value-Added Food Processing Workshop

Join us for a free Value-added Food Processing workshop May 15th at the Thurston County Fairgrounds from 6pm to 8:30pm. Participants will learn about licensing requirements from WSDA and Thurston County staff, available processing facilities, recent WSU Extension research on the market opportunities for processed produce. Registration is free, and opens at 5:30pm. Information here.

Do you have wireworms?

The WSU Thurston County Extension is seeking farmer cooperators for a wireworm study in 2019.   Cooperator farmers will make a small plot available, and WSU will evaluate trap cropping with wheat as compared to an organically-approved spinosad insecticidal bait and a no-management control. Contact WSU Extension if interested, bramwell@wsu.edu. Project information available here.

USDA 2017 Census of Agriculture Data Available

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) today announced the results of the 2017 Census of Agriculture, spanning some 6.4 million new points of information about America’s farms and ranches. Access the USDA Press Release here.

Is agricultural business activity healthy and expanding, or not? ....Read on.
