Michael Kenna | A 45 Year Odyssey

We’ve just found out about a recently published retrospective of Michael Kenna: A 45 Year Odyssey and will have stock in April 2019. It was published to coincide with a recent exhibition at TOKYO PHOTOGRAPHIC ART MUSEUM. Apparently the exhibition is coming to the Bosham Gallery in West Sussex in June and July 2019 but I can’t see many copies of the book still being available then. Using innovative binding, this beautifully produced work is the most recent in Japanese publisher RAM’s ongoing Michael Kenna series, following In Japan, In Hokkaido and In France. But they were slim volumes while A 45 Year Odyssey is more of a ‘proper book’! Kenna personally selected the 100 images in this monograph and has contributed an original essay. It includes previously unpublished work, and it’s good to see some early photos taken in the UK in the 1970s. Sample images.

In his first monograph, Ian Howorth (Brighton-based, Peruvian-born) explores identity and home. “Having lived in nine different houses and three different countries by the time I was 16, this has left me with a confused identity and a certain unease with myself.” His colour-film images of England in Arcadia ask questions of nostalgia without being nostalgic. Rob Bremner | The Dash Between

Bluecoat Press are publishing another excellent archive of Liverpool photographs, this time by Rob Bremner, a Scottish photographer who moved to the area as a student, and stayed to document the working-class areas of the city through the 1980s and 1990s. We will have signed copies. Sample images.

Toby Binder | Wee Muckers of Belfast

German photographer Toby Binder has devoted much of his time in recent years to documenting the lives of young people in the UK. Wee Muckers of Belfast accompanies teenagers in six Protestant and Catholic neighborhoods. It depicts the unemployment, drug crime, and violence afflicting Belfast’s youth, whether they live on one side of the Peace Wall or the other. Sample images.

Lee Friedlander | The Mind and the Hand

During his long career, while best known for documenting the US’s social landscape, Lee Friedlander has also been photographing his closest friends. In The Mind and the Hand – a slipcased set of six paperback books – he presents portraits of six of his photographic friends taken over the past five decades: Richard Benson, William Christenberry, William Eggleston, Walker Evans, John Szarkowski and Garry Winogrand.

Berenice Abbott | Portraits of Modernity

Fundacion Mapfre in Madrid are currently holding a major exhibition of the work of Berenice Abbott and, as usual, there is a substantial, high-quality book to accompany it. Portraits of Modernity presents her work in three categories: portraits of significant avant-garde artists such as Jean Cocteau and James Joyce; photographs of New York; and scientific photographs. Luigi Ghirri | Colazione sull’Erba
|

|
|
Mack will shortly be publishing Colazione sull’Erba presenting early work by Luigi Ghirri made between 1972 and 1974 on the outskirts of Modena. His focus was the juncture of nature and artifice in the man-made environment: the symmetries of cypress trees, well-kept lawns, the personalising touch of plants in pots. Modelled on Kodachrome, Ghirri’s influential photobook from 1978 (Mack edition still available), this volume is the first book in a planned series which will take Ghirri’s original categories for his own projects as the basis for a collection elaborating Ghirri’s work. Guido Guidi | Le Corbusier – Five Architectures
|

|
In 2003, Italian photographer Guido Guidi created a series documenting a selection of buildings by Le Corbusier in France. The project is collected in Le Corbusier – Five Architectures which includes many photographs never published before. Guidi chose some of Le Corbusier’s lesser known buildings: the Maison la Roche (completed in 1925), the Maison Planeix (1928), the Villa Savoye (1931), the French Salvation Army’s Cité de Refuge (1933), and the factory building Usine Duval (1951). Sue Barr | The Architecture of Transit
|
|
|
|
Sue Barr is Head of Photography at the Architectural Association and a leading architectural photographer, obsessed by concrete and Brutalist architecture. The Architecture of Transit is her first monograph. Following historical 18th-century routes from the Swiss Alps to Naples, she used a large-format camera to photograph motorways and their associated megastructures that allow travellers to avoid both the efforts and the sights that their ‘Grand Tour’ predecessors experienced. Barr’s images insist that the modern motorway architecture has a beauty of its own. Sample images.
