He's back!
We finally got Willie out of the port mid of February.
After some planned repairs in Cape Town, we enjoyed the first nights "back home" during a camping trip with our South African friends Pierre and Adéle.

And taking the chance of being close to one of Africa's best spots for kite surfing, Heiner took some lessons in Langebaan, north of Cape Town.

Visitors are coming!
We had planned to finally leave the city for good, but an unexpected reason brought us back: very spontaneously, our friend Nele and her three year old son Malou had decided to visit us!
Together, we explored the area around Cape Town, the wine area to the east and hit the famous (and pretty touristy) Garden Route along South Africa's southern coast. We did some hikes, rented canoes and enjoyed our time together. It was great fun to share our life with Nele and Malou for 2.5 weeks. It's so different to travel with a child, and we became better and better in planning kid friendly stuff and finding the playground in each village.

The probably biggest highlight during their visit was the trip to Addo Elephant National Park. We saw lions, elephants, zebras, Cape buffaloes, antelopes and so much more. It was amazing! And it was great to share that experience with good friends! Thanks so much for visiting us!

The less touristy areas
After they had left, we explored the more quiet area east of the Garden Route, the so called Wild Coast. It's the area of the Xhosa Africans, and it's the total contrast to the South Africa we had experienced before. No big shopping malls, no fast food chains, and no white people anymore. We liked it from the first moment. The people are very open and friendly.
Unfortunately, the weather wasn't in our favor and it rained quite a lot. So, we decided to leave that area earlier and head towards another country.

This small place called Lesotho
Another country? Really? Yeah! Lesotho is a small country in the middle of South Africa. It's a kingdom, and the highest country in the world - everything lies above 1000 m.
We spent 1.5 weeks in Lesotho. And we loved it! The mountainous scenery is so beautiful, many roads (over many mountain passes) are adventurous and the people, again, are friendly and relaxed. Although, thanks to the altitude, it got pretty chilly at night and we experienced a thunderstorm almost every evening, the weather was perfect during the day. We enjoyed our time there a lot!

We left Lesotho over the famous Sani Pass back to South Africa - a steep gravel road with countless switch backs, and amazing views!

JoBurg's madness
After our quiet days in Lesotho, we went straight to Johannesburg, South Africa's biggest and busiest city. There are not many major sights to visit as a tourist. But the vibe in the city, the diversity and contrasts fascinated us. We did some very interesting guided walks in the more notorious areas and surprisingly encountered a very relaxed atmosphere there!

How we will continue - the decision
Well, only one week is left on our South African visa. Only one stop is planned until then: Kruger National Park!
From there on, we will drive to eSwatini and on to Mozambique.
In the last weeks, we also made the final decision: We will travel back to Germany along the west coast! That means, we will head back to the West via Zambia, Botswana and Namibia. And then up the coast.
If you have been to one of the countries that lie in front of us, or you know somebody, or you live there...
let us know about all the things we should know! :)
