2019 New Mexico Legislative Roundup
Sustainable Energy

Clean and sustainable energy was a hot topic at the 2019 New Mexico Legislative Session. At least four bills and two memorials that passed are relevant to the NM SMART Grid Center research and associated education and workforce development components.

Smart and Connected Communities

The S&CC program supports integrative research that addresses fundamental technological and social science dimensions of smart and connected communities and pilots solutions together with communities. NSF is interested in projects that consider the sustainability of the research outcomes beyond the life of the project, including the scalability and transferability of the proposed solutions. Energize New Mexico
Continues to Yield Dividends

UNM graduate student, Jon Golla, received a $6,000 award from New Mexico Water Resources Research Institute to support his research titled, Surface Water Quality Implications of Valles Caledera Geothermal Fluids on Jemez Watershed: A Holistic Hydrogeochemical Investigation;Both Golla and his advisor, UNM Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences Professor Laura Crossey, were participants in the EPSCoR Energize New Mexico project (2013-2018). US DOE Solar Energy Technologies Office Announces Awards

Congratulations to Dr. Jay Misra (NMSU) on his award from the US Department of Energy Solar Energy Technologies Office. Dr. Misra is collaborating with the University of North Carolina at Charlotte on the $3.7 million project titled “Optimal Reconfiguration and Resilient Control Framework for Real-Time Photovoltaic Dispatch to Manage Critical Infrastructure.” Learn more...

US Department of Energy Community College Internships
This program encourages community college students to enter technical careers relevant to the DOE mission by providing technical training experiences at the DOE laboratories. Selected students participate as interns appointed at one of 16 participating DOE laboratories.

Deadline for Fall Term is May 29.

Undergraduate Internships

This program encourages undergraduate and recent graduates to pursue Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics careers by providing research experiences at one of 17 participating DOE laboratories/ facilities on projects related to the DOE mission.

Seeking nominations for the NM EPSCoR Mentor Award which recognizes NM SMART Grid team members who demonstrate excellence in supporting students' academic, research, and career endeavors, and in creating inclusive environments for all students. Deadline for undergraduate or graduate students to nominate their mentors is May 24.

Please welcome our new Public Relations Specialist, Brittney Van Der Werff. Brittney earned an undergraduate degree in Psychology from Northern Arizona University, and a Master's in Behavior, Education, and Communication from the University of Michigan. She has published two academic papers and is fascinated by the concept of "effective" communication. Most recently Brittney worked for the National Park Service, as the lead of social media communications and exhibit design for the newly established Valles Caldera National Preserve. Brittney is honored and delighted to join the EPSCoR team.
