It is with great excitement that we share the news that our first six projects have been approved by our Research and Commercialisation Committee! Given the project value, two of these six will go to the Board in early May for final approval.
The four projects to now enter contracting stage are:
REDUCE
- Save food packaging criteria and framework, with FFW CRC Participants the Australian Institute of Packaging, Australian Food Cold Chain Council Ltd, Australian Food and Grocery Council, Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology, and RMIT University.
- Consumer perceptions of the role of packaging in reducing food waste, with FFW CRC Participants Sustainability Victoria, Woolworths and RMIT University.
- Development and validation of reduced thermal processing requirements for canned abalone with FFW CRC Participants the Abalone Association of Australasia, Abalone Council of Australia, Fisheries Research and Development Corporation, Primary Industries and Regions SA (PIRSA) - South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI).

Easter – a food (waste) feast
Easter, along with Christmas, is a time of year when many of us leave the dinner table with that feeling of having eaten too much of the good stuff. Britons throw away 720 millon eggs a year
Still on the topic of eggs, but of a different kind! The scale of this waste has been blamed on overcautious consumers relying on best-before dates to decide if eggs are fresh enough to eat. Researchers say eggs are often safe to eat long after packaging date passes.

The country winning the battle on food waste
The South Korean government banned sending food to landfills in 2005 and, in 2013, also prohibited the dumping of garbage juice (leftover water squeezed from food waste) into the sea. Today, a staggering 95 percent of food waste is recycled!

The Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) National Technical Forum
The day will begin with a Women in Packaging breakfast, followed by the biennial AIP National Technical Forum, then finishing with the gala Australasian Packaging & Innovation Design Awards dinner. Register now for this event on 30 April in Sydney.

REFRESH final conference
Led by our Board Director Toine Timmermans, the final conference for the European Horizon2020 REFRESH project will be held on 10 May at the Barcelona Design Centre where sharing the REFRESH project results will encourage future action on EU food waste reduction. Our CEO Steve Lapidge will be representing the FFW CRC at this event, and we will provide a summary for you in a future newsletter.

Circular economy approaches can be found all over the world, and go well beyond ‘recycling’, or simply sharing resources. Loop Circular Economy Platform provides accessible circular economy training for professionals across Australia who need to get across this complex topic very quickly.

AND DON’T FORGET … FFW CRC's inaugural annual conference!
Come along to our first science symposium on Wednesday November 20, followed by our participant meeting and AGM the following day. This will be held at the KPMG offices in the Docklands, Melbourne. Travel and accommodation will be at your own expense with the FFW CRC covering the conference costs.
