Its been another big week for Netflix as Q1 2019 saw the highest addition of net paid subscribers in the streamers' history. Netflix is now nearing 150m paid subscribers worldwide, but said growth next quarter is likely to be down 8% against a year earlier. With international key, Netflix is continuing its localised content push, announcing 10 new film commissions in India and its first animated African original.
The UK Government is planning to look into streaming regulation, potentially imposing similar UK content production quotas on streaming services as those already in place for broadcasters. Meanwhile, UKTV, which recently became majority-owned by the BBC, has added live streaming for a suite of its channels to its online catch-up service, UKTV Play.
Russian company Rambler has confirmed reports that it secured Russian rights to the UK Premier league, with plans to air it primarily on its streaming platform, Okko. India's SonyLIV is launching a premium streaming tier which includes sports such as NBA and UEFA Champions League as well as a selection of international and drama content to its streaming platform.
Just a week after WarnerMedia denied rumours that HBO's European assets might get sold to go towards some of parent AT&T's debt, AT&T has sold its 9.5% stake in Hulu to... Hulu... in a deal valuing the streamer at around $15bn. Away from the streaming market, emerging markets satellite group, M7, has received Czech regulatory approval to acquire cableco UPC from Liberty Global.
