STAKEHOLDERS ENGAGEMENT AND COORDINATION MEETING

Hand in Hand Afghanistan conducted a coordination meeting in Herat city which also marks the inauguration of the Creating Future Economic Prospects for Reintegration of Returnees and IDPs in Herat and Bamyan provinces of Afghanistan through the Layers Poultry Value Chain project which is funded by GIZ. The purpose of this meeting was to better engage different stakeholders in to the project. In this meeting representatives from Herat Department of Refugees and Repatriation, Department of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock, poultry farmers union, private sector and village leaders from the target communities participated. PROJECT MONITORING BY STAKEHOLDERS
Poultry Officer of the Balkh Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock Department visited the project beneficiaries of Promoting Women’s Socio-Economic Empowerment through Layer Poultry Farming project in Nahre Shahi district and Deputy Director and Skills Development Officer of the Balkh Labor and Social Affairs Department visited on-going vocational and life skills classes in Khulm district.. STAFF CAPACITY BUILDING
Hand in Hand Afghanistan organized three-days beekeeping training for 5 female trainers of the Reducing Poverty through Entrepreneurship and Female Empowerment project. The training was delivered in form of Training of Trainers and these trainers will work to train 250 women on beekeeping in Sholgara district of Balkh province. See more…
WOMEN ESTABLISH AND EXPAND BUSINESSES
During this reporting period, Self-Help Group members have saved total AFN 268,710 and lent AFN 278,550 internally.
The internal loans have resulted in establishment and enhacement of 25 (all female) micro-enterprises which has resulted in creation of 4 (all female) jobs in their respective communities.
BAS MARO, THE POULTRY FARMER

We lived in Pakistan for more than thirty years and returned to Afghanistan around eight years ago.  We did not have anything here and didn’t know anything about Afghanistan. I am married and all my kids were born and raised in Pakistan. Later we were forced to leave Pakistan.” Says Bas Maro, 56, mother of 7, living in Hassan Khail Zorkot, a village just outside Aiybak city, Samangan Province.
Bas Maro used to be a housewife, her husband is old and can’t work, her eldest son works in Iran as labor and send money occasionally to feed the family. She says, “My son struggles in Iran because there is no work here.
His income is not sufficient to feed the family but we didn’t have any other option or idea until I heard about the poultry project, I joined Spozhmai group and everything started to change. I received poultry training and learnt about generating income staying at home.” Read more...
