Scottish Economy Slowdown

The on-going situation with Brexit would seem to be having an adverse impact on our economy with key Scottish industrial sectors experiencing an investment slowdown in business in the first quarter of 2019.  Key points from the SCC Quarterly Economic Indicator survey for Q1 of 2019 include:

  • On Wage Increases: Every sector in the survey faced rising wage pressures with construction and retail reporting the biggest wage increases in over a dozen years.

  • On Investment: Investment performance is lower in every sector year on year except construction, while investment intentions remain restrained confirming a wait-and-see approach to spending.

  • On Business Confidence: The level of business optimism is lower across all sectors but retail compared to the previous quarter.  Manufacturing has been particularly hit, as confidence dipped to the lowest level recorded for the sector since 2012. Read  more here.

Scottish Borders Crowdfunding

A new fundraising opportunity for community groups and businesses has been set up through the Scottish Borders’ European Union funded LEADER programme.

Crowdfunding is the practice of funding a project or venture by raising small amounts of money from a large number of people, typically via the internet.

Crowdfunding in the Borders

Scottish Borders now has a dedicated crowdfunding coach who will provide one-to-one and group training and support to create a crowdfunding page. Feedback, advice and coaching on how to crowdfund will be provided free to anyone getting in contact with Crowdfunder Scotland. Visit the website here.
