Students and Staff Support Children with Hair Loss

What were you doing last week over your lunch hour? Did you get a hair cut? Last week, 21 staff and students at Three Lakes High School and Riverside High School at Oak Creek Correctional Facility participated in a cut-a-thon to support children with hair loss.
This project was initiated by student Alissa, who was diagnosed with alopecia at the age of 10 and lost all of her hair, eyelashes and eyebrows.
Alissa received a package from Children with Hair Loss every year for five years. The package included a hairpiece, hair products, bandanas and head wraps. When her hair grew back three years ago, she wanted to pay it forward. She spoke with the Oregon Youth Authority’s Group Life Coordinator Cody Richardson, who coordinated the event.
“I’m so proud of everyone who gave back in this manner,” Alissa said. “Children with Hair Loss helped me to feel confident and secure, and I’m glad to have so many here participate in this [project].”
Student Dani, when asked about her new hairstyle, said, “I love my new short hair…and I love the fact that I got to donate my healthy hair to someone who needs it. With my hair, I gave hope to someone else.”
