Arizona Broadcasters,

It's a big week for Arizona's EAS system, we're taking sign-ups for our next FREE sales webinar in May, and you'll read below about an important reminder for your station public files. All of that and more below:

TOMORROW: THE FUTURE OF ARIZONA'S EAS MEETING
The ABA is co-hosting a critical meeting for Arizona's EAS system TOMORROW (April 24). In partnership with the state, big upgrades are coming for broadcasters, and the enhancements include a new internet-based delivery system, the potential for bilingual delivery, and a refocused effort around how information about AMBER Alerts is shared with newsrooms in particular. We just finished building the presentation, and as an added plus, the meeting will give an abbreviated summary/review that defines EAS and all the FCC-imposed rules for broadcasters. Please do everything you can to ensure someone represents your station(s). News media is welcome as well. Here is the RSVP form. We will have a conference bridge set up for those who can't make it in person.

NEXT ABA WEBINAR: THE NEW ROI, AND IT'S NOT WHAT YOU THINK!
We had a GREAT launch to the ABA's new monthly webinar series last week. If you missed the call created exclusively for Arizona broadcasters (how to sell the value of broadcasting against digital), you can listen to the archive here. Our goal is to bring new voices into your building each month who can offer different perspective to help you keep growing all areas of your business.

We're marching on with another sales-focused webinar on May 15 - and this one focuses on ROI. I know what you are thinking, not another "return on investment" webinar. But it's not what you imagine. You'll like the message and can immediately begin using it with your clients. Here's a hint. It involves your audiences! This webinar is hosted by Derron Steenbergen from the Swagger Institute.

RADIO ALERT: PODCASTING WAR TAKES ON NEW FORM TODAY
If you're a radio station, you've likely got your eyes on the podcasting world like a hawk. But is a major change on the horizon? Today (April 23) is the start of a big test around the country. It's the launch of Luminary, a podcasting company startup that wants people to pay $7.99 per month for a long list of podcasting content. Think of it like a Netflix for podcasting. No advertising. Just subscription revenue. The company already has big names signed on to host podcasts, but will it work (and be the start of a new model that local radio stations can latch onto)? Or will it be a dud? Luminary is investing $100 million into the effort, so we've got to watch closely.

IMPORTANT REMINDER: ACTIVATE/UPDATE YOUR FCC PUBLIC FILE
As of March 1, 2018, all radio and television stations are required to have transitioned their public inspection file to the Federal Communications Commission’s online public file system. Yet despite the year-old deadline, many  broadcasters have not yet activated their online public file or have failed to keep their public file up-to-date.

These stations are at risk of substantial FCC fines. While the FCC has emailed warning notices to some stations, we strongly urge you not to wait for an FCC notice. Stations should immediately confirm that they are complying with the FCC’s rules. This takes on added importance as we enter the license renewal cycle.

Of particular concern is the failure to upload the quarterly issues/programs lists, which demonstrate how a station has addressed the needs and interests of its community. These lists must be placed in each station’s online public file on a quarterly basis, going back to the start of the current 8-year license term. Failure to comply can be extremely costly. The FCC recently fined five radio stations $10,000 to $12,000 each for lacking copies of the issues/programs lists in their online public files. In addition to the issues/programs lists, stations should promptly upload their annual EEO public file reports, children’s television reports, political broadcasting information, and all other required materials.

If you have questions, please contact your station’s legal counsel, the ABA or the National Association of Broadcasters legal department at 866.682.0276.

THIS WEEK: 12 BROADCAST TRENDS (AND ARIZONA GROWTH NEWS)

1) If your DMA touches the Phoenix Metro area, the U.S. census has some news this week that's incredibly marketable to your clients. Maricopa County remains the fastest-growing county in the entire country, adding nearly 100,000 residents in just the last year. And even if you don't reach Phoenix, don't forget Arizona remains FOURTH in the country for overall state-wide growth.

2) Okay, you've probably thought this too, even if you haven't said anything. Are touchscreen car radios (and the advancing smart car audio world) safe?

3) At what point in the world of today does "wear-out" happen for a radio ad campaign? This study says it's actually taking far longer than it used to, and that's good for broadcasters!

4) You know the TV business is changing fast when you read that 31 million Americans over age 18 have NEVER paid for traditional TV and fall into the "cord cutters" world.

5) How big a role will 5G technology play in broadcasting? A new editorial this week outlines why it will be complementary to digital broadcasting, but not a replacement.

6) The NFL remains BIG business for TV. How big? Even the network TV execs are talking about how pleased they are with the NFL TV packages.

7) Remember back when tablets were all the rage? Well, now smart speakers are set to eclipse the total number of tablets.

8) HBO made news this week by claiming that their premiere episode for the last season of Game of Thrones led to a 97% increase in digital streaming in their app.

9) Here's some automotive news to take stock of for your sales teams. J.D. Power says sales were down but dealer profits up in the first quarter of 2019.

10) If you have an OTT app as a TV station, I'm guessing your challenge isn't with creating content. It's probably with getting people to go to the the OTT app and actually discover it. Here's how some stations are finding success.

11) Who doesn't love a good list? Here are 5 trends shaping the future of broadcasting, and it's hard to disagree with what's on the list.

12) Here's another editorial on the complicated dynamics of marijuana advertising for broadcasters.
