Happy Spring from K&A!
Greetings from Caroline Robins, our Program Manager at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital, Mission Bay

A Sense Of Community:

It is wonderful to see the positive impact Kids & Art makes each time we head to the 6th floor outpatient waiting areas with our art supplies. Our weekly workshops at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital continue to prove the healing power of art. It is my favorite part of the week!

Something that has struck me in my role as Program Manager is the sense of strong community within Kids & Art, the hospital, participants and volunteers.

It always seems like we build mini communities at every workshop. Strangers chat and families bond while they tap into a creative space together. Art has the power to bring people together and I give a big ‘shout out’ to our volunteers who create a welcoming and nurturing space for participants. The hospital can be a scary place and this is a time of uncertainty for families so it is wonderful to think we make the experience better for them at our community art table.

I am thrilled we have become part of the hospital community. The staff are always so welcoming and I lose count of how many smiles are exchanged as we walk along the familiar hospital hallways or while we’re making art in the waiting areas.

I love to witness our volunteers building friendships and a community among themselves, talking about challenges and triumphs as artists, sharing experiences or simply enjoying a lunch together.

The Kids & Art community is blossoming and in full bloom just like the spring flowers after all the recent rain.

Volunteer Appreciation
"Thank you" does not seem adequate to express our gratitude to each and everyone of you who have supported K&A over the years. Your generous spirit not only impacts the lives of the children and families we serve, but it reminds us everyday that there is so much goodness in the world and so many people who are willing to step up to share it with others.

It may not be enough, but we will never stop saying
for all of the ways you lift us up and help us to keep Kids & Art's mission alive.

Featured Volunteer
Featured Volunteer:  This April, we would like to recognize Nathalie Strand as Volunteer of the Month!

Nathalie on why she volunteers with Kids & Art: I have been volunteering with K&A since 2016, which marks my recovery from an important surgery. During my many years of being sick, the only thing that kept me going was my family and my art. When I found a pamphlet for K&A at the grocery store, I took it as a sign I shouldn’t ignore. Volunteering at the hospital has been a wonderful and rewarding experience. It was time to pay forward all of the help I received for years. The kids, who are bored and/or worried, get to sit down with us and  forget about why they are there. They create avidly and fearlessly. As an artist, it is very humbling to witness. They don’t compromise, they don’t hesitate. Most of the times, the ones who need the help the most are the parents. It is so important that they get a break, especially during long hours in the waiting room. It is a real honor that these families let us be a part of their journey! I highly recommend to anyone to give a little bit of their time to this important mission; they will only regret not having done it sooner.
