We are excited to announce our Food Rescue Pilot! We've teamed up with Shubie's to save, donate, and deliver hundreds of pounds of food to our neighbors experiencing food insecurity. In just two months, we've rescued close to 800lbs of food!

Food rescue is the practice of collecting edible food that would have otherwise gone to waste from restaurants, grocers, and other food establishments and distributing it for consumption. An estimated 40% of food is wasted annually in the United States.

Shubie's is donating prepared foods, baked goods, and packaged grocery items that are still edible, just not sell-able. The items may be excess inventory, nearing expiration dates, or have slight defects. Instead of letting this food go to waste, we are promptly redirecting to programs and food insecure individuals.
SPUR volunteers pick up the food six times a week and deliver to agencies such as Plummer Youth Promise in Salem, Eliot House in Swampscott, Ruth's Way in Lynn, Marblehead Food Pantry, and the Little Free Pantry in Marblehead.

Each food rescue takes about 20 min (40 min roundtrip). Due to the local nature of our work in Marblehead, Salem, Swampscott and Lynn, our partner food donors and recipients are within a few miles, helping to ensure quick transport with food.

A little bit of rain couldn't stop our volunteers from heading out this past Sunday to clean trash and debris from 19 beaches, parks, and playgrounds across Marblehead, Swampscott, Nahant, and Salem.

Our annual effort mobilized 224 volunteers, 123 of whom were under the age of 17. Collectively volunteers netted over 60 bags of trash and piles of debris. Among notable items: 2 golf clubs, 3 beach chairs, a traffic cone, 2 lobster traps, a car bumper, a rubber snake, a plastic steering wheel, 3 shoes, $2 in loose change, and 4 hypodermic needles.

Thank you to all the volunteers who joined us this year! We are grateful to have you as part of our Community of Doers!
