My parents immigrated to South Florida from Jamaica with just a 5th grade education, seeking greater opportunity for our family. My father labored for 16 years in the sugar cane fields of the Florida Glades after coming to the United States, and my mom would cook to feed the migrant workers. I was born in rural Pahokee, Florida.
