Look for something positive in each
day, even if some days you have to
look a little harder.

Desk of Geoff Berry:

I am the Treasurer of the Quiet Storm Foundation. I have been a member for 3 years. As treasurer, I am responsible for tracking funds and ensuring that each donation we receive is allocated to support Quiet Storm programs. My other responsibility as a board member is serving as Chairman of the Black History Month Essay Contest. I truly enjoying hearing the essays that the students recite and learning about the world through their perspective.  One of the highlights is having the opportunity to present the winners to the Las Vegas community, so they may see the truly outstanding accomplishments of our youth. The Quiet Storm Foundation is doing great work in our city and I invite you to join us in continuing our mission.

OUT-OF-SCHOOL FITNESS PROGRAM
GayLynn Strawberry, Fitness Coordinator

Our fitness programs help students physically and emotionally. The programs are designed to promote teamwork and good attitudes. The students are introduced to human anatomy and the importance of training in good form. Overall, the students are introduced to habits that contribute to a healthy lifestyle.

10th ANNUAL CJ WATSON BLACK HISTORY
ORATORICAL COMPETITION AND LUNCHEON

This year 200 students in Las Vegas recited essays on the topic, "How do I explain cultural diversity to the world?" The essays covered a wide range of perspectives, from civil rights leaders to politicians to the importance in learning other languages and embracing different cultural traditions. This year’s winners were featured on NBC 3 News Las Vegas and KECP Radio with Commissioner Lawrence Weekly. They were also recognized at a luncheon sponsored by the Palazzo Hotel and Casino. The winners of this year's contest were awarded a trip to Washington DC, sponsored by Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-4) and Southwest Airlines.

The students had the opportunity to tour Howard University and the US Capitol. The highlight of the trip was our visit to the various attractions on the National Mall, including the Smithsonian Museum, the Washington, Lincoln, and Martin L King Monuments, and the White House. Thank you to all the volunteers and sponsors that made this experience possible. We look forward to our contest next year!
