10th ANNUAL CJ WATSON BLACK HISTORY
ORATORICAL COMPETITION AND LUNCHEON
This year 200 students in Las Vegas recited essays on the topic, "How do I explain cultural diversity to the world?" The essays covered a wide range of perspectives, from civil rights leaders to politicians to the importance in learning other languages and embracing different cultural traditions. This year’s winners were featured on NBC 3 News Las Vegas and KECP Radio with Commissioner Lawrence Weekly. They were also recognized at a luncheon sponsored by the Palazzo Hotel and Casino. The winners of this year's contest were awarded a trip to Washington DC, sponsored by Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-4) and Southwest Airlines.
The students had the opportunity to tour Howard University and the US Capitol. The highlight of the trip was our visit to the various attractions on the National Mall, including the Smithsonian Museum, the Washington, Lincoln, and Martin L King Monuments, and the White House. Thank you to all the volunteers and sponsors that made this experience possible. We look forward to our contest next year!
