Spring 2019 Exhibits & Programs

Art In Our Library is pleased to welcome Janelle Carbajal's show Excerpts from May 5 - June 28, 2019.

Excerpts is a portrait series of fictional characters existing in dramatic and mysterious narratives. With little more than a facial expression and a few simple words, Excerpts explores the world of modern mythologies in the making.

The artist will host a live drawing demonstration followed by a reception on Saturday, May 11, 2019 from 2-4pm in the Peninsula Center Library Community Room. Participants will be invited to create their own drawings based upon the provided live models.

Janelle Carbajal is an artist and illustrator best known for her realistic poetical portraits and eerie narrative creations. She received a BFA in painting and printmaking from the University of Southern California and has since produced art for children’s books, graphic novels, and album covers. Heavily inspired by the myths, folktales, and superstitions she grew up hearing in her Mexican-American household, Janelle often features unearthly characters throughout her work. Featured PVLD Title

“In her entertaining and accessible debut, Quinn mixes biography, art history, and women’s studies to shed light on 15 women artists.… The color reproductions add to this book’s appeal, giving readers a chance to appreciate the artists’ work as well as Quinn’s upbeat writing.” —Publishers Weekly

Historically, major women artists have been excluded from the mainstream art canon. Aligned with the resurgence of feminism in pop culture, Broad Strokes offers an entertaining corrective to that omission. Art historian Bridget Quinn delves into the lives and careers of 15 brilliant female artists in text that's smart, feisty, educational, and an enjoyable read. Replete with beautiful reproductions of the artists' works and contemporary portraits of each artist by renowned illustrator Lisa Congdon, this is art history from 1600 to the present day for the modern art lover, reader, and feminist.

Featuring: Artemisia Gentileschi, Judith Leyster, Adélaïde Labille-Guiard, Marie Denise Villers, Rosa Bonheur, Edmonia Lewis, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Vanessa Bell, Alice Neel, Lee Krasner, Louise Bourgeois, Ruth Asawa, Ana Mendieta, Kara Walker, and Susan O'Malley.
