October 2011 Newsletter
We're well into the Autumn term now - and there's loads happening around the branch. Since our September newsletter the branch has organised the first Lifesaving Instructors Course in the UK, helped lifesaving clubs at Bristol and Bath University to launch a water-safety campaign aimed at students, and written several press-releases for local papers. We're also in discussions with a local charity about offering Save a Baby's Life courses in Bristol, and we've got an Open-Water Activity Supervisor course planned for the New Year. Phew!

As always, we're here to help YOU! We've got a committee meeting coming up on the 19 Oct so if we can be of any assistance to you or your group, please contact avon@rlsswest.org.uk.

Lifesaving Instructors' Course
RLSS Avon and North Wiltshire hosted the first ever Lifesaving Instructors' course in the UK last month! Eleven lifesavers from four different lifesaving groups descended on Keynsham Leisure Centre to take part in the pilot course.
I am pleased to report a 100% success rate - that's 11 newly qualified instructors who are ready to deliver the new Survive and Save awards.

Student Water Safety Campaign
Over the last two years, four students have drowned in the rivers and canals in Bath and Bristol. In response, members of Bristol and Bath University LSCs launched a water safety campaign to encourage their fellow students to enjoy the rivers safely. The lifesavers handed out postcards to first year students at the Fresher's Fair. The postcards, produced by RLSS Avon & North Wiltshire, contain practical tips which will help students to stay safe.

Trip To The Czech Republic
RLSS West Region are running a trip to the Grand Prix Moravie lifesaving competition in the Czech Republic from 2-4 Mar 2012. The competition is open to RLSS members born in 1994-1998, and you don’t need any previous experience to take part in the trip. National Lifesaving
Championships 2011
Well done to Charlotte Hands, Jude Butler, Evie Longshaw, Helen Morris, Rebecca Cullis-Hallsworth, Lisa Johnston, Kevin Hands, Pamela Bougeard and Geoff Williams who all represented RLSS A&NW at the West region heats of the National Championships on the 17th Sept! Bristol University Lifesaving Competition
The Bristol Uni competition will be taking place on 26 Nov 2011. The competition will be open to community lifesaving clubs. For more information, or to enter a team, please e-mail committee-lifesavingclub-ubu@bris.ac.uk

Crawley Open Competition
The Crawley Open lifesaving competition will take place on 3 Dec 2011. The competition includes speed events and a Simulated Emergency Response Competition. The entry fee is £60 per team (up to 6 people). Contact wjstainer@yahoo.co.uk by 10 Nov 2011 for more details.

Club and Volunteer E-zine
RLSS UK has launched a Club & Volunteer E-zine that is being mailed out bi-monthly. The e-zines  will concentrate on different topics for each edition with each one providing help and guidance on a variety of topics. The most recent edition is around funding and development.
