Season of Giving Back

May 2019

Welcome to the start of the Back Bay Ringers spring concert season, our Season of Giving Back! Our first performance of the spring was actually at the New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall, where we were invited to participate in their Inaugural Gala on April 27th. Next up, if you have ever wanted to see how BBR prepares for our concerts, we will be hosting an open rehearsal on May 20th, the day before the Boston Handbell Festival. All are welcome to attend and see what a working session with BBR looks like. Then, of course, is the Boston Handbell Festival itself on Tuesday, May 21st at 8 pm, where the Back Bay Ringers will be joined by the New England Ringers, the Merrimack Valley Ringers, the Old South Ringers, and our guest choir this year, the Shoreline Ringers from Connecticut. Each group will present solo pieces, and will also perform together, led by our guest clinician, Jane Nolan, director of the Shoreline Ringers. The concert is free, but we will be accepting donations to help defray the cost, and to keep the festival going far into the future. Walk-ins are welcome, but you can RSVP in advance or donate using a credit card at this link. We hope to see you there!

In June, we will be continuing our tradition of giving back to the community by donating the proceeds of our spring concerts to a local charity doing important work. This year is extra-special, however, because we will also be working with Brian Clements, one of the editors of Bullets into Bells, a recently published anthology of poems and commentary about the spate of mass shootings in America. Our concerts will include spoken excerpts from the book and music inspired by these recent tragic events. All ticket sales will be donated to the organization Stop Handgun Violence, based in Beverly, MA. More information about them can be found at the link above.

This year is also BBR’s 15th anniversary, and to celebrate, we will be hosting a special event for all of our alumni, just prior to the start of our first concert of the season in Cambridge on June 8th. There we will have some new BBR merchandise available for purchase, featuring an update of our classic mouse design. Attendees of that concert will be treated to a special, once-in-a-lifetime event, as our alumni step on stage and perform! You won’t want to miss it! And even if you can’t make it, we hope to see you at the Boston Handbell Festival or at one of our other spring concerts, either in Wellesley (June 9th) or in Boston (June 14th). Tickets to any of these events may be purchased at the links highlighted. We hope to see you at one of these great events this spring!
