Taking stock ― where BrisLETS stands in the Aussie mix

BrisLETS is gearing up for promotional activities to boost trading and member satisfaction. We want to foster an upward trend in trader numbers and transactions. This story looks at boosting the trading record, maintaining the database, ways to support administration, the unique challenges we face, recent and forthcoming improvements, and membership topics. We seek your feedback NOW.

Trading Day, April 2019

By Josephine Brown

Our monthly Trading Day coincided with Easter Sunday this year, but, in a spirit of Keep calm and carry on, it went ahead anyway with many of the usual stalwarts attending.

Towards the end of the day, we had a visitor from the Gold Coast, Cj (Craige) Cronin, who wanted to ask us about how we operate. He has applied for membership with us, and is thinking of establishing a LETS group down there.

Our regular Storytelling session’s theme was A life-changing event. This made for some very enjoyable stories from participants, including one new storyteller dipping his toe in the water.

We were entertained by fascinating narratives and curious details about our fellow members that we perhaps wouldn’t have, otherwise.

Other benefits of the storytelling activity include:

  • increased mind discipline via organising one’s thoughts and recollections so as to stay within the recommended five-minute limit (and thanks to Ishka McNulty for keeping us honest!)

  • the pleasure of recalling good times or challenges overcome

  • getting to know each other better, thus assisting trade, since people do business with people they know and like.

Afterwards, we shared a delicious afternoon tea.

As it is a Trading Day, this session’s organiser now understands it is inappropriate to offer this activity for FREE. However, participants may reflect its value to them by deciding how many units they would like to contribute.

Next month’s Storytelling theme, suggested by Jeni Lewington:

My favourite travel destination.

Flying the BrisLETS flag at Coopers Plains

As the photos show, President Simon Cole and Brother Joseph Smith recently attended the Autumn Fest at the fabulous and well-resourced St David’s Neighbourhood Centre, Coopers Plains, where BrisLETS holds monthly get-togethers for southside members.

Simon and Joe advertised the benefits of joining BrisLETS. A few other LETS members attended and pounced on some great bargains.

The Centre Manager actually thanked US for attending! Here’s what she said:

Hi Simon

I just wanted to express my thanks and for your support of Autumn Fest 2019. It was lovely to have BrisLETS along and I hope you enjoyed the day.

St David’s Neighbourhood Centre holds events like Autumn Fest to provide opportunities for those in our community to connect, build friendships, be empowered and supported. Our efforts would not be as successful as they are without the commitment and support of the community and groups like yours. We received lots of positive feedback from the event and are still experiencing positive outcomes from the day. Once again, thank you for attending Autumn Fest 2019.

Regards

Kellie Griffiths, Centre Manager, St David’s Neighbourhood Centre

Members hiding gems

By Liz Stanhope

Brisbane LETs has many members offering a host of useful goods and services ...

… only no one knows about them.

Nor do these members know what’s happening, or why.

Here’s how it works

When you list an item that you offer, you have a choice of it staying current for one week to one year.

At the end of your chosen period, your offering lapses and is no longer visible to anyone searching for what you offer.

Only long-term members will know who to contact if they need,

  • a massage in Woolloongabba
  • an electrician to visit their home
  • advice on biocharing
  • advice on establishing a small enterprise
  • guitar lessons
  • Zenthai massage.

This is just a small sample of lapsed (hidden) offerings STILL AVAILABLE from actively trading members.

How to become visible again

When you log in, you'll see in red text a message that you have expired offerings. Update them immediately.

To help increase the trading opportunities for all members and make BrisLets a more vibrant and useful organisation, check your membership details and make sure they are up to date.

  • Got something to offer? List it in detail.

  • Are your contact details current? If not, tweak them.

  • Is there anything you want? Goods or services, make sure you list whatever it is. Someone among our many members may have it or do it.

Happy trading.

Update your offerings

Guidelines for creating a new offer
(or updating an existing one)

By Josephine Brown

Increased trading among BrisLETS members is something that would benefit everyone.

What holds trading back, right now?

One suggestion is lack of knowledge ― about the product | service | provider.

As an example, I recently wanted to spend some units on a professional service. I'd seen that the particular service I needed was offered on BrisLETS.

Thing is, when I checked, I found the offerer was not registered with their professional body. Nor did I see any details, either about the offering or the offerer.

Despite this, the offerer charges a high number of units per hour.

Would you feel confident about accepting such an offering? I did not.

So, following a conversation with President Simon Cole, I drafted a profile template to guide new members and their offerings, as well as existing members who want to increase trading by detailing their offerings.

Check out the accompanying diagram. Please tell us whether you’d find it helpful, either to promote your own offering or to gain confidence in what BrisLETS offers.

Free tuition on how to use BrisLETS & CES

Do you or a member you know need help using the CES website to trade? Are you having trouble understanding how to price goods and services, or find information on the BrisLETS site?

On the first Saturday of the month, your CES Website Administrator Simon Cole is offering free sessions to bring you answers to your how-to questions on everything to do with BrisLETS & CES. (These sessions are subsidised by the transaction levy.)

These are proposed to take place at the State Library of Queensland at South Bank between 4 and 5 pm. The location and time of day is negotiable, usually on or near the first Saturday of the month, but at least two members must RSVP by commenting on the calendar event on our website.  [CLICK-HERE]

LETS
― a form of complementary superannuation

By Paul Wildman

LETS as part of super? You have to be kidding!

Surely, there’s more to super ― more to life! ― than what is officially defined by the dictionary and Big Government? This only forces us to be at the mercy of, well, Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae and the dodgy Lehman Brothers.

But wait ― there’s more!
