A Message from the President
Carena Townsend
president@a2jaycees.org
Going to conference at the beginning of May reminded me why I joined the Jaycees - to make a positive impact and find a community of like-minded people. Conference brings together Jaycees from all across the state to share their projects, successes, knowledge, and friendship. That Saturday morning, I had the opportunity to speak with the presidents from Kalamazoo, Redford, Livonia, Grand Rapids and the JCI USA president, Tricia Buehne, about challenges within our own communities, projects we are working on, and opportunities to work together.

All of this is to say that conference is a really wonderful way to get involved in the JCI Michigan community, and I hope you consider attending the next conference on September 6-8 in Battle Creek.
The chapter will reimburse first-timer registration during Early Bird registration.

May Monthly Meeting Recap
This week, President Carena Townsend had the privilege of swearing in some new members. Congratulations to all those who took the oath!

We had fun playing a "getting to know you" bingo where we mixed, mingled, and handed out some prizes to the lucky winners.

We also heard from our VPs about how to get involved with the chapter. This was followed shortly thereafter with "Sign-Up Palooza" to have all members - new and old - sign up for one of our many upcoming events.

Forget to sign up for something? No worries! The May 2019 Crier has plenty of sign-up forms. You can also email your VPs and event chairs if you have any questions.
April and May Events Recap
Pointless Brewery Fundraiser
There's nothing funny about raising money for a good cause... except when the Jaycees go to improv!

Thank you to everyone who came out to support the Jaycees at Pointless Brewery on Friday, April 26. We raised over $300 for the Ann Arbor Jaycees Foundation between the 8:00 PM and 10:00 PM shows!

Also, a special thanks to our wonderful, hilarious performers and Kelly O'Leary, who helped bridge the gap between our two organizations.
Habitat for Humanity
On Saturday, April 13, we participated in a Habitat for Humanity Build Day. This year was much smoother than last year - no digging through frozen ground with pickaxes! We had pleasant weather, a great group, and finished everything laid out for the day. Volunteers dug out parts of the foundation, applied an insulating paint to the foundation, hung siding and trim, and even installed the exterior door locks. Habitat took pictures throughout the rehabilitation and remodeling of this house, with all images available here.

Park Clean-Up
On Saturday, May 25, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, we will be assisting the Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation with the removal of non-native plants from the Burns-Stokes Preserve. The Burns-Stokes Preserve is a small nature area which encompasses parts of one of Washtenaw County's many ghost towns: Scio Village. The preserve includes the former mill pond and the site of the mill itself. Unfortunately, no traces of the mill are apparent today. However, the preserve hosts some unique architectural pieces.

For a little history, visit this website. For the present, here are directions to and a map of the Burns-Stokes Preserve.

Meal Prep at the Delonis Center
On Saturday, June 1, we have small-group opportunity (5 people) preparing food in the Food Gatherers Community Kitchen at the Delonis Center from 12:00 PM to 2:30 PM.

Please put your name down even if there are already five people signed up - we can always try scheduling another shift. I will reach out to everyone who has signed up by May 20 to verify availability and determine whether we should schedule a second food preparation shift. Also, note that we have a Food Gatherers Warehouse shift in August, which can fit up to 30 people.
Fourth of July Parade
The next meeting of the Fourth of July Parade Committee will be on Wednesday, May 15, at 6:00 PM at the downtown Ann Arbor Beer Grotto location. This will coincide with our happy hour social event, which begins at 5:00 PM.

In the meantime, please feel free to sign up to volunteer in the parade. We need all hands on deck to make the parade a success! You may be asked to collect waivers, monitor the barricades, keep the participants on track as they march, or assist with our bike decorating contest.
