 Sign it for the climate

Wednesday, May 8
 Send Gov. Hogan a message:
SIGN the Clean Energy Jobs Act

The General Assembly passed the Clean Energy Jobs Act (SB516), which will double Maryland’s Renewable Portfolio Standard to 50% renewable electricity by 2030 and require the state to determine the best path to achieve 100% renewable electricity by 2040. Lawmakers overrode Gov. Hogan's veto of the Clean Energy Jobs Act of 2016. This time, we want the governor to "sign it for the climate." Activists  Vincent DeMarco and his son, Jamie, will be biking from the Governor's Mansion to Ellicott City to symbolize how Maryland residents are connected in the fight against climate disruption. (They biked across the state in 2016.)

10:15 a.m.: Rally in Annapolis, starting at City Dock
Register here. Facebook event
4:30 p.m.  News conference at Main Street Oriental Rugs in Ellicott City with Sen. Clarence Lam, Delegates Eric Ebersole and Courtney Watson, and two Ellicott City residents who witnessed the 2018 flood.  RSVP to: emily@chesapeakeclimate.org

Silence from Hogan
on these victories, too . . .

PASSED: Ban on polystyrene foam (Styrofoam) food containers (SB285/HB109) at businesses and schools. If the governor signs the bill, Maryland would become the first state to ban these containers. And, thanks to a new study, we now know that plastic bits from bags and Styrofoam are blowing around in the wind and reaching remote mountains.

PASSED: Plastic bag fee (HB1166) gives Howard County the authority to impose a fee on single-use plastic bags at checkout.

PASSED: Community solar pilot program  SB520/HB683. This pilot program is extended through July 1, 2022.

PASSED: Energy storage pilot project  SB573/HB650 Read about it here

Please urge Gov. Hogan to sign these bills. Call 410-974-3901 (1-800-735-2258 for MD Relay) or email here. Suggested script is here.

VOICES Coalition
Art Installation
Monday, May 6
through Thursday, May 9
 National Mall, DC

Our allies with VOICES (Victory Over In-frack-structure, Clean Energy inStead) are setting up a living sculpture to show the harms to communities from pipelines and other fossil fuel infrastructure. Ask key members of Congress to hold hearings and open an investigation into the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). Details on Facebook  and a signup page. Last week, FERC approved another pipeline. In a lone dissent, Commissioner Richard Glick called the decision "fatally flawed" because it failed to "assess the significance of the project’s contribution to climate change."
