Coming up this Sunday afternoon,
May 5, at 4:00pm in Middletown!
The GMChorale, now in its fifth decade, with 90 dedicated singers from 40 Connecticut communities, has developed a reputation for taking a chance on lesser-known choral music and presenting it with artistry, skill, and verve to music lovers across southern New England.

On Sunday, May 5, 2019, the ensemble will present a program of choral music by Anton Bruckner, featuring the “unexpectedly ethereal and luminous” Mass in E Minor for voices and wind orchestra.

This Mass is rarely performed in the United States, and this performance by the GMChorale in Middletown is the first we know of in the region. This ethereal music deserves to be heard and appreciated.

Please join us on May 5 at 4:00pm in Middletown to hear the GMChorale, Alchemy, an orchestra of wind instruments, and organ, all led by Artistic Director Joseph D'Eugenio, for what is sure to be a memorable musical experience.

Meet Lindsay Cabaniss

On Sunday, Lindsay will sing Bruckner's solo setting of Ave Maria, accompanied on the organ by Edward Clark.

Lindsay Cabaniss, mezzo-soprano, debuted as soloist with the GMChorale in 2017 under the baton of Joseph D’Eugenio, as Dorothea in the new oratorio, Letter from Italy, 1944, when it premiered at the Bushnell Center for Performing Arts in Hartford. Lindsay has sung with many summer intensives including Respiro Opera, NYC; Utah Vocal Arts Academy, as a Principle Artist preparing the role of Charlotte from Werther; Bethesda Summer Music Festival, performing Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd and Third Lady in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte; and with Manhattan Opera Studio as Cherubino in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro. Previously, she sang with the College Light Opera Company as The Witch in Into the Woods, Nettie Fowler in Carousel, Madame Thénardier in Les Miserables, Mabel in The Pajama Game and Mrs. Jones in How to Succeed in Business. During undergraduate studies at the Hartt School of Music, Lindsay sang Public Opinion in Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld; Baba in Menotti’s The Medium; Second Lady in Mozart’s The Magic Flute, and Dinah in scenes from Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti. In the fall of 2019, Lindsay will cover Hansel in Hansel and Gretel with Madison Lyric Stage. Lindsay received her Bachelor of Music from the Hartt School of Music in 2016, under the tutelage of Joanna Levy.

About Our “Bruckner Angel”

In the image at right, a youthful angel blows a blast on an elegant trumpet. This is one of many statues of angelic musicians that grace the sanctuary of the Sankt Florian monastery in Upper Austria, where Bruckner was enrolled as a professional chorister and later served as chief organist before moving to Linz and, later, Vienna.

The photo inspired us to try to locate exactly where in that vastly ornate sanctuary this angel is perched. We found him, right down front under the
“Bruckner Organ,” as shown below.

The photo is by French photographer Paul Smit, who graciously gave the GMChorale permission to use this photo in the promotional materials for this concert.

The GMChorale's Own Angel
In Memoriam John D. Coghill

When the GMChorale sings on Sunday, May 5, the performance will be dedicated to the loving memory of John Coghill, who sang in the Chorale's tenor section for many years, and who also served the organization in many capacities, including as the ensemble's administrator, as a member of the Board of Directors, and in many other volunteer roles. We miss John sorely, as do hundreds and thousands of people across the Greater Hartford region whose lives he touched through his music, teaching, leadership, mentorship, 1000-watt smile, steady friendship, and true kindness. He was one in a million.
