Agency conducts training audits

The Canadian Beef Check-Off Agency (the Agency) is focusing on the proper remittance and collection of check-off across the country this year, and the Agency’s three federally-appointed inspectors recently completed a live training audit with the help of Gateway Livestock Marketing Ltd. (GLM). The inspectors also worked on behalf of the Alberta Beef Producers to audit for Alberta’s provincial service fee at the same time.

The half-day training audit was conducted on April 24 in Taber, AB at GLM’s head office, after a day of learning more about how cattle dealers and marketing companies operate in western Canada.

Coming soon: sustainability video series

The Public & Stakeholder Engagement Program is working on a series of videos showcasing the many positive attributes of the Canadian beef industry to a sustainable environment, economy and positive health and well-being of the public.

The first project set to take shape will be a video captured in Southern Alberta with an emphasis carbon capture and storage on native grasslands and wet lands, while showcasing the beautiful landscapes featuring an array of native species and plants that have a synergistic relationship with cows.

Canadian carcass sizes continue to increase

The 2016/2017 National Beef Quality Audit (NBQA) completed a carcass grade cooler audit to assess marbling and lean meat yield.

Since the previous audit in 2010/2011, the number of Canadian cattle grading AAA significantly increased which has supported the growth of branded beef programs in retail and the restaurant sector.

Yield grade performance has decreased over the same time period. Due to the increase in fat cover, fewer cattle are meeting the yield class 1 designation. In fed cattle, the cost to industry from discounts on yield grades has increased from $12.57/head or $32 million in 2010/11 to $12.81/head or $33 million in 2016/17.

On April 10, 2019, Canada Beef hosted Centennial Foodservice on a Canadian beef experience day, to share the Canadian beef story with corporate influencers.

Canada Beef welcomes new President

Canada Beef is pleased to welcome Michael Young as the organization’s new President, effective April 23, 2019. Working with the Canada Beef Market Development and Promotion Committee, Young will lead all aspects of Canada Beef’s domestic and international market development and promotion efforts, including: strategic business planning, program development, performance measurement and reporting, and human resource management.
