Featured: Team Unlimited from North Garland HS in the Dallas County Promise Challenge. As the winning team, they based their solution on livestreaming Q&A sessions with industry professionals to help expose their peers to more career opportunities that align with their interests.

Dallas Country Students Rise to the College Access Challenge

The Dallas County Promise hosted the first annual Promise Challenge to amplify student voice in designing solutions to postsecondary pathway challenges. On March 27, 2019, nine Dallas County high schools presented their innovative solutions at Southern Methodist University in front of a team of distinguished judges from the college access community including our very own TxCAN Director, Shareea Woods! The judges selected the three winning teams below out of nine regional high schools that have been part of the eight-week challenge based on creativity/originality, feasibility, sustainability, and demonstrated campus and community support.
  1. North Garland High School, Team Unlimited 
  2. South Grand Prairie High School, Southside Dreamers
  3. MacArthur High School, Dallas County Cardinals

TxCAN Welcomed NCAN to Dallas! 
TxCAN hosted the National College Access Network (NCAN) Spring Training on March 28, 2019 at Communities Foundation of Texas/Educate Texas. Community and education leaders from across the state participated in a day of learning and networking with a focus on cross-sector partnerships and pathways to student college access and success.

Shifting Culture and Changing Practice: Reaching Students Where They Are
The 2019 P-16 Professional Development Conference helps to bridge secondary and postsecondary education and support the goals of the 60x30TX Texas Higher Education Strategic Plan. High school counselors, admissions advisors from two-year and four-year institutions, and other educators interested in learning more about college access and success across Texas are invited to attend.

National Postsecondary Strategy Institute in Rio Grande Valley, December 2019
TxCAN is partnering with RGV FOCUS to host a National Postsecondary Strategy Institute in the Rio Grande Valley region this winter. National college access leader, Greg Darnieder, will coach school district leadership teams as they reimagine their college access strategies. School districts from across the state are encouraged to apply to participate.
 
This opportunity will be limited to 30 school districts, and more information about the conference and applications will available soon. To learn more and share your interest in participating, please contact us at txcan@cftexas.org.


College Success Institute in Berkeley, CA, May 20-21
The Making Waves Foundation in hosting a College Success Institute on May 20-21 in Berkeley, California. The event will bring together practitioners, funders and researchers focused on supporting first-generation and low-income students for postsecondary success. The event is sponsored by Rainwater Foundation and will feature national experts and learning on this topic. Visit the College Success Institute webpage for the agenda and to register.
