The Link Between the Gut and Depression

The gut is connected to the brain through the vagus nerve and nervous system. The vagus nerve goes from the brain stem to the neck, thorax, and abdomen. The vagus nerve helps regulate heart rate, speech, GI issues, and sweating. The enteric system deals with the central nervous system. This helps regulates the activity of smooth muscles in the gut and the glandular system as well as bile, stomach acid, digestive enzymes and bile.
The gut bacteria influences brain chemistry and behavior. Research has shown that people who suffer from IBS usually also have depression or anxiety as well.
The gut influences serotonin and dopamine production. Majority of the guts serotonin is found in the gut. Serotonin is a regulator of the GI system.
Taking probiotics, drinking kombucha, eating healthy and taking care of your stomach can help regulate your bacteria in the stomach as well as regulate your mood.
