"To me we are the most beautiful creatures in the whole world, Black people. And I mean that in every sense." — Nina Simone

Morning Musings

I'm baack! You didn't really think I was going to gloss HOMECOMING: A film by Beyoncé, did you? What kind of member of the BeyHive do you think I am? Apparently the kind who needs to watch said film in solitude because I need to process in private. The only way I can describe it is that Bey is my Game of Thrones ... Hey, we all have our crazy, amirite? (shout-out to my friend Meital for pointing this out and making me feel well, less crazy).

When I learned Her Majesty was dropping the concert documentary of her legendary Coachella performance, I was simply ecstatic. In case you've been living under a rock, Beyoncé headlined last year's festival and was the first BLACK woman to do so. Not "woman of color," she said -- and meant -- Black, with a capital B 'cuz she 'bout that life, but I digress.

I remember staying up until the wee hours of the morning to watch Beychella, all the while live tweeting along with Black Twitter and texting my fellow BeyHive member, Traci (hey, girl!). I was glued to my laptop -- the execution, the perfection, the concept, EVERYTHING! There is no way you can watch that and tell me she's not the greatest entertainer alive. Don't @ me.

After watching last year, I felt a surge of motivation -- I went to the gym, did laundry, meditated, worked on my book proposal, and wrote this here blog post. The Beychella Effect in practice, folks.

And watching HOMECOMING was no different (I've listened to the live album at least once a day every day since it dropped). This is the exact moment in the documentary when I gasped and my heart dropped. I'd watched both weekends, but that part just captures the pure perfectionist that is Beyoncé.

Beyoncé continues to inspire me to be not only my best self, but my Blackest self. Not only was her Coachella performance HBCU-inspired (that's historically Black colleges and universities, in case you didn't know), but the documentary was punctuated with intellectual and inspirational quotes from some of the greatest Black thinkers of our time. Just see this week's #WednesdayWisdom quote for proof.

And word on the street is Netflix has two more projects with the Queen -- just don't invite me to your watch party, I will leave if there is talking (just ask my coworkers ... love y'all). But do invite me to your rooftop party so we can participate in the #BeforeILetGo challenge together.

Love,

  • Be School Podcast interview with Taylor Elyse Morrison all about overcoming impostor syndrome and trusting your dopeness
  • You Wanna Do What Podcast interview with Monica Rivera about investing in your career (Fun fact: stay tuned for a Bey-inspired lightning round at the end of the interview.)
