“Most tragic event that's happened on our campus”

That was Chief Jeff Baker of UNC Charlotte Police & Public Safety, during a press conference following the shooting on campus at approximately 5:40 p.m. yesterday. The tragedy left two people dead and four others injured, three were in critical condition. 

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police has charged 22-year-old Trystan Andrew Terrell with two counts of murder and four counts of attempted murder.

A candlelight vigil is planned for 6 p.m. in the Star Quad at UNCC.

Many students were on campus for the last of day of classes, including our student contributor Jonathan Limehouse. He said, "I have never been in a situation like this." Jonathan recounted moments following the campus shooting. Read his story.

Up close with Cathay Dawkins, leader in Charlotte’s Black business ecosystem. While the Small Business Administration designates the first week in May as National Small Business Week, Charlotte is celebrating the whole month. The city is home to thousands of Black-owned businesses that we highlight throughout the year. This month, we'll remind you of some of them.

Next Level Leadership graduates its inaugural class. During May, we also observe National Mental Health Awareness Month. Last month, we told you the story of how Next Level Leadership's first class held its Be Mindful: Saving Our Black Boys event. About 40 young men, ages 8 to 18, attended the free event where they rotated among three sessions, each tapping into a different area of mental health.

Next Level leadership graduated 19 members of its inaugural class during a ceremony over the weekend. The organization said that the Be Mindful event was so successful that class members plan to continue it as an annual event after graduation. See photos from the graduation ceremony.

John Singleton's family urges black men to get their blood pressure checked. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Black men are at greatest risk of having a stroke in the U.S. and are more likely to have a stroke at a younger age. High blood pressure can lead to heart attacks and strokes.

The family of John Singleton, the 51-year-old Oscar-nominated director and screenwriter who died on Monday, said that he suffered from hypertension. They're raising awareness around high blood pressure in the Black community and urging people to get familiar with the symptoms. Read the story. (NBC News)
