Hello Everyone,
Our annual VAPS convention is only about 4 weeks away with your chance to register to attend, closing very soon. We want you to register by May 12th so we can finalise numbers for our workshops, Cocktail party and formal dinner.
If you are still thinking of attending, think in the positive! We have already had a fantastic response to this year’s attendance and we want many more of you to come!

AUSTRALIAN PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY
The society is inviting nominations from Victorian APS members to fill the position of APS State Representative.
The State Representative reports to the Chair of the State Representatives Sub Committee and the role involves:
- Being the local face of APS in their State
- To promote the APS to non-members in the State
- To support APS and its Management and Office in their endeavours to promote the APS and its activities at State level
- To help with general photographic queries and direct members to relevant sources of advice including the APS website
- To make access to APS easier, particularly for those living in regional areas
- To assist and organise APS meetings, outings and workshops if there is sufficient interest
- To provide an APS presence where possible at appropriate events such as Camera Club and State Camera Club Body events, major photographic exhibitions and events
- To liaise with the Chair of the State Representatives committee and the APS President and to work in the best interests of the APS
There is a high level of support for the State representative through the APS Office and the provision of operational manuals and procedure documents.

ADAM WILLIAMS
Adam is a landscape photographer from Sydney Australia and is one of the new generations of photographers that followed the digital camera revolution into photography.
In 2011 Adam and his wife sold all of their possessions, including their home, to follow a dream of traveling indefinitely around Australia, It would also prove to be a major stepping-stone in Adams photographic career.
“For the best part of two years, I studied and practiced photography almost every single day, which brought huge improvements into all areas of my photography.”
Describing his work Adam says:
“For me it’s all about communicating emotion. Powerful imagery makes you feel something: elated, depressed, uplifted, in despair, makes you shed a tear or remember the good times past. These elusive emotional triggers are something I am constantly looking for. I have lived with levels of depression and anxiety for periods of my life and much of the emotive nature of my work draws its inspiration from the highs and lows of those experiences.
To me, the landscape is the canvas for my artistic expression. The world doesn’t need me to document how beautiful our planet is, there are many talented photographers out there doing a wonderful job of that already.
There is only ever one photographer that can genuinely share the way you yourself interact with this world.
My aim is to bring small pieces of my unique vision to life. My passions, my concerns, my emotions all play a part in producing a final image. This can often result in my work varying wildly from the given scene.”

EWEN BELL
Ewen Bell is an editorial photographer. He includes travel, food, wilderness and wildlife in his work. The consistent theme across them all is a dedication to reality and honesty in his images. His core belief is that the reality of the world is sufficiently beautiful that inspiration and beauty can be found all around us. We don't need to tamper and fake our lives, we just need to embrace what is right in front of us. Sometimes that's country style cooking, sometimes that's a holy man high on hash, sometimes that's a native Australian song-bird calling for a mate in a carpark.
Since 2005 Ewen has been leading workshops and tours to teach his ideas on photography, with greater emphasis on what happens behind the camera than which f-stop you're shooting with. Ideas are more powerful than equipment. Ewen was Editor at Large for Digital Photography magazine in Australia for three years, during which time he wrote over 100,000 words on the art of photography and laid the foundation for his new book being released in May 2019. Before that he was also a travel journalist and has been published in over 150 publications in Australia, the USA, China and the UK. In 2007 he was awarded Travel Photographer of the Year by the ASTW. He still appears in glossy magazines all over the world and has images published from every continent across the globe.
Ewen has exhibited his work only in support of charities. Over a decade ago he gathered a team together to photograph and share the story of orangutans in the wilds of Borneo to raise money for their conservation. The devastating Tsunami of 2004 in Sri Lanka became another trigger for Ewen to share his work, raising money to rebuild homes and encourage travellers to support the economy. He won the Fringe Prize at the 2011 Ballarat International Foto Biennale for his series on rescued elephants in the north of Thailand.
Many of Ewen's photography tours are focused on working with NGO's as well. He's run elephant treks in Laos to aid funding for local programs that assist in elephant welfare. In 2017 & 2018 he organised special events to assist a Laos based charity called My Library, bringing the benefits of workshops, a large format printer and a complete set of Lumix cameras with lenses donated by Panasonic Australia. For Ewen this was one of the most satisfying and fulfilling moments of his career, to return to Laos and directly support a quality charity who is helping a new generation to find their voice through photography.
Ewen's latest project, with the support of Panasonic Australia, has brought some of Australia's birding community into the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan to share ideas and inspirations on protecting habitats and species. The key to protecting habitats is through engagement of local communities. If they are aware of the biodiversity in their wild lands then they can better protect them. Ewen's recent role as ambassador for the Lumix G-series has re-ignited his passion for wildlife and birds, making it easier to achieve more. He describes the new camera technology as "bringing the birds closer", and will be sharing a national exhibition of birds in Bhutan during 2019.

KEREN DOBIA
At the 2017 Australian Professional Photography Awards, a photographer and judge said of Keren’s work that “there are some portraits that simply say what we look like, and there are some that say who we are.”
This is the principle that has inspired Keren’s ongoing series of portraits depicting Australian artists and artisans, I AM. – four of which earnt her the distinction of being named the 2017 AIPP Australian Professional Photographer of the Year. Keren recently exhibited 15 striking large scale images of this series at forty-five downstairs.
Keren is an accredited professional photographer and the creative director of her theatrical compositions. Keren’s artwork is influenced by her background in painting, drawing, and fashion, and her images often blur the line between photography and illustration. Keren moulds her work from concept to completion.
With her inspirational vision, creativity and skill set, Keren designs and fabricates costumes and sets. With a natural attention to detail and her industry recognised postproduction skills Keren works her images to their final realization. Keren's distinctive approach and friendly and energetic personality attracts commissions equally from burlesque, circus, and theatre performers, as well as from public care providers.
Keren holds a Diploma of Photo Imaging from Melbourne Polytechnic (formerly NMIT), Alongside her creative and commercial work Keren lectures at Melbourne Polytechnic and RMIT in the Photo Imaging courses.

KARL LUDIK
Karl Ludik has had a long-standing association with the Photographic Industry. His job has taken him to many parts of the globe and he has seen great changes within the industry. The head office in Japan of the Olympus company have recently created a special new role for Karl which he is pursuing with great dedication and enthusiasm.
Karl is currently the Olympus Australia Professional Photography manager and given his vast experience in the industry will be presenting a wonderful keynote presentation on Macro photography. Karl will also head up two workshops at the convention with Saturday afternoon on Portraits and the Sunday afternoon on Macro photography.
Aaron Harivel, the Olympus Australia product and Education specialist from Sydney will help Karl run a portrait workshop on the Saturday afternoon and a Macro hands on workshop on Sunday afternoon.

Mounting Techniques
Over the last few years we have had several issues with the mounting of prints for the annual Interclub competition and exhibition.
Poor mounting techniques
- Insufficient tape mounting the print to the matboard
- Insufficient double-sided tape where the backing board was the same size as the front mat board.
- Sticky tape used to adhere the backing board to the front matboard instead of masking tape.-Total thickness greater than 5mm. Thick prints take up more total space and hence a transport problem.
Understandably members have been upset when their prints come back damaged. As prints get handled up to 18 times during the judging/exhibition process, it is necessary for both the exhibition personnel and the print owners to protect prints appropriately. With this in mind, it would be an excellent step if comp stewards could promote the following requirements, so that their members become familiar with what is expected for the VAPS exhibition.Some clubs have changed their club rules to comply with VAPS exhibition rules to achieve this.
Most clubs already use the A2 art folio/folder. These are available from Office Works at a cost of $60. (recommend: Jasart A2 College Portfolio). The cheaper ones tend to fall apart after a while. Fifteen prints, if mounted appropriately, will comfortably fit into this type of folder. For clubs that are unable to obtain this folder a suitable folder will be supplied free of charge after VAPSCON 2019.
Because of this need to fit the required sized folder, there is a problem with the thickness of the mounted prints.The problem arises when some members use 5mm foam core backing instead of a piece of matboard taped to the back. This makes the finished print thicker than 5mm and the total thickness of 15 prints is then about 90mm which will not fit into one folder. Hence some clubs have sent their prints in a cardboard box or Australia Post bag.
5mm foam core backing is banned from 2019.Those members who persist in using foam core backing, may use 3mm foam core backing which is readily available.Total thickness of 3mm foam core and 1mm matboard will be about 4mm.
To ensure print protection, please promote the following:
Prints must be mounted correctly so that the matboard does not separate from the print or from the backing board. If you use double sided tape it must be at least 20mm wide and completely taped around all four sides. 10 mm pieces of tape do not adhere long enough.
Good quality masking tape (not painters masking tape) is available from any hardware store. Framing tape is preferable for attaching the print along the whole top edge to the matboard.
Prints should not be wrapped in cellophane as it has to be removed for judging and therefore creates extra handling and work for the volunteers.
Prints that have backing thicker than 3mm, or start to fall apart because they are not mounted correctly, will be withdrawn from the judging and the exhibition.
We ask that clubs change their practices and rules so that members do not have to prepare their prints specially for the VAPS Interclub.

APJA - Judges Association

April 2019
So far the APJA in 2019 has run a Level 1 (Novice) Image Evaluation, 1 day course, with the help of the Williamstown Camera Club hosting the event at Altona North. Over 35 VAPS club members attended this course. From the feedback, those that attended enjoyed the day and got quite a lot out of the course. Our thanks to Sheryle Griffiths, Paul Robinson, Ron Cork, JP Weibel and Rob Sloane as presenters and the members of Williamstown CC and APJA.
Earlier in the year we had to cancel an Image Evaluation workshop, this we will shortly be reschedling.
In April, APJA held its committee meeting followed by a general meeting including a presentation on Macro Photography by Mario Mirabile. Mario highlighted the dificulity in defining macro against close up as well as the inherent technical difficulity in making great macro images. Very few club members are involved in making and entering true 1:1 macro images, and very few clubs would have a strictly macro competition. Mario also went over the range of options on equipment for macro work and pointed out some great macro photographers as a work reference.
Coming up on Sunday June 2nd there will be a level 2 (Intern) training course. This course is being hosted by Yarra Ranges Camera Club and will be held at Wandin North. You do not have to have done level 1 to do level 2, but you must register before the 29th May with Alfred ASGZ47_99@outlook.com, just email him with your name, club, and if you are an APJA member or on the Judges list.
The course includes “What Judges Look For”, How to Critique and Score Images”, “Judging Landscapes”, “Judging Still Life”, Judging Projected Images”, “Judging an Open Competition”, and Image Evaluation Prac. The event has to break even, so the cost for participants is $25 for APJA members, $35 for people on the VAPS Judges List and $65 for all others.
Note: Annual fee for APJA membership is $40. It is also proposed to run Level 4 (Licentiate) Sunday Aug 18, and Level 5 (Fellow) Sunday October 27, most likely at Murrumbeena (Caulfield Camera Club), depending on availability of presenters and venue, cost would be $35 (APJA), $50 (On Judges List, and $80 (all others).
Sunday July 28 APJA AGM 2pm. All welcome. St. Peter’s Cnr Ames and Neerim Roads Murrumbeena. You don’t have to be a judge to be a member of the APJA. If you would like help support the future of judging at clubs, you would be most welcome.

NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION
The Melbourne Camera Club is holding its first Nature Photography, opening on 18th May. The Exhibition will feature a selection of exciting works from Club members and from invited, guest nature photographers.
Following the Australian Photographic Societies guidelines for nature photography, images for the exhibition will cover wildlife and nature. Images entered in the wildlife section will include animals, birds, insects, marine and botanical subjects (including fungi and algae) all taken in the wild.
The exhibition will be open to the public for three weekends from 10 am to 4 pm at the Melbourne Camera Club, on the corner of Ferrars and Dorcas Streets, South Melbourne. Dates for the Exhibition are 18, 19, 25, and 26 May and 1 and 2 June. Visitors to the Club on the last weekend will also have the opportunity to view audio visuals from the Latow Canada and AVG Melbourne Australia Audio Visual Exchange.

A Brief History:
Camera clubs have existed in Melbourne since the 1890’s and an umbrella organisation called the Victorian Photographic Affiliation was formed in 1908. This guided amateur photography in Victoria for forty years. The Victorian Association of Photographic Societies was formed on 27 September 1952 and comprised of 12 clubs. This has grown to more than 70 clubs in Jan 2016. VAPS is a non-profit association that is entirely self-funded. The Association is run by an elected Committee of Management which is responsible for the operations of the Association, and for ensuring the Association fulfils the objectives.
