Online News Association Student Innovation Lab
We’re excited to announce the volunteer mentors who will guide this year’s Student Newsroom and Innovation Lab. Now in its tenth year, the Student Newsroom is an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to gain hands-on experience during the three-day Online News Association Conference and Online Journalism Awards Ceremony. These volunteer mentors will guide students as they produce coverage of the conference, helping them build digital storytelling skills and experiment with multimedia techniques.

Twenty students will be selected to join these mentors in the ONA19 Student Newsroom and Innovation Lab. The deadline for students to apply is May 23, 2019, 11:59 p.m. EDT. Selected students receive complimentary badges, as well as travel and lodging support. Learn more about the program and application.

Summit Scholarship - The Plank Center for Public Relations
After a very successful first Summit in Oct. 2018, the Plank Center’s second Summit on Diversity & Inclusion in Public Relations will be held Nov. 8, 2019, in Chicago in conjunction with the Center’s Milestones in Mentoring Gala. The Summit will showcase cutting-edge research, highlight organizations which are moving the D&I needle and feature individuals who have overcome D&I challenges. Attendees will gain actionable insights to implement within their own organizations.

This Summit offers a unique opportunity for diverse public relations students to gain professional insights and to see, hear from and network with other students and successful professionals from underrepresented groups.

Up to 10 students from underrepresented groups will receive scholarships to attend the Plank Center’s Summit and Milestones in Mentoring Gala. Applicants may be from any underrepresented group. Each scholarship will include air travel to and from Chicago, one night’s stay (Nov. 7) at the Union League Club, one ticket to the Gala and one ticket to The Plank Summit, totaling an estimated $1,500.

Reporting Fellow - The Chronicle of Higher Education / Washington, D.C.
The Chronicle of Higher Education is seeking a one-year reporting fellow to join our daily-news team. The fellow will function as a general-assignment reporter, covering a broad set of issues at the center of the academic enterprise.

Your chief responsibility will be to produce smart, engaging coverage that speaks to the themes and concerns that touch our readers every day. As a member of our daily-news reporting team, you will pick up assignments and pitch stories about issues of deep national importance, such as race, student activism, and finance. Through creative story ideas and careful reporting, your work will shed light on the everyday experiences of scholars, administrators, and students.

We’re looking for a recent college graduate or early-career journalist with a passion for storytelling and in-depth reporting. You’ll need to be self-motivated and proactive, eager to collaborate with others, attuned to how news is distributed online, and flexible enough to juggle multiple stories and approaches at once. You’ll write often on deadline, and you’ll look to drive conversations about the big issues facing colleges and universities.

Among our highest priorities as a newsroom is hiring and retaining staff who reflect the diverse world we cover. For this position, we strongly encourage members of historically underrepresented communities to apply.

The Chronicle is independently owned and based in Washington, D.C. This position will pay $40,000 a year with benefits, which are among the best in the business.

Fall Carolina Alumni Review Advertising Sales Intern - UNC GAA / Chapel Hill, NC
The UNC General Alumni Association’s award-winning magazine, the Carolina Alumni Review, seeks an advertising sales intern for fall semester. This intern will assist with maintaining current accounts, developing new accounts and assisting with related administrative tasks.

Typical responsibilities include advertising sales for the Carolina Alumni Review alumni magazine, Carolina Classifieds and Dining Around Town sections, preproduction art proofing, postproduction follow up, distribution of complimentary magazines, billing and tear sheets. Assistance with ad design and production is another component of this position.

The advertising intern will exhibit strong communication and editing skills and excellent interpersonal and organizational abilities. Being detail-oriented is key. Eye for good design and knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud preferred.

This internship is paid and available for 8-10 hours per week throughout the fall semester. This internship is located on campus at the George Watts Hill Alumni Center on Stadium Drive.

Computational Journalist - The Dallas Morning News / Dallas, TX
The Dallas Morning News is looking for a computational journalist to join its newsroom. The right candidate has a complementary mix of code skills and journalism chops. She or he will help in our emphasis on developing our interactive, graphic and otherwise visual storytelling online while continuing The News' tradition of statistically sophisticated and data-dense accountability journalism.

Our interactives and data team is responsible for both data reporting, analysis and visualization, in addition to developing tools and applications that are both reader and newsroom facing. Essential functions could include:

Intern - Public Radio East / New Bern, NC

Duties include reporting, writing and producing radio news stories; producing digital news content for our website; recording audio in the field; posting content to social media. Experience in broadcast journalism is a bonus.

The UNC System Office located in Chapel Hill, NC invites applications for the position of Vice President for Communications. 

The Vice President for Communications is responsible for supporting System Office leadership by providing subject matter expertise and oversight of the University’s branding, strategic communications, media affairs, social media, web, and community relations activities. This role will successfully promote the strategic goals and objectives of the University to a variety of internal and external constituencies to enable a climate of public and private support for public higher education in North Carolina. This includes formulating and implementing a comprehensive media relations program, overseeing a strategic branding strategy, and producing a variety of communications work products that advance the University’s goals and priorities at the local, state, national, and global levels. Public Communications Specialist - UNC Injury Prevention Research Center / Chapel Hill, NC
Founded in 1987, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Injury Prevention Research Center, IPRC, is dedicated to conducting research that prevents injury and violence, and providing outreach, training, and education on injury and violence prevention.

This position provides outreach and training support to an academic research Center focused on injury and violence prevention.
